Be patient now... the next phase is usually a longer wait... as the nitrite to nitrate bacteria takes twice as long as the ammonia to nitrite bacteria to multiply.

Absolutely, at this stage you need to be patient but also be prepared.

When the last stage starts to happen you may find your ph level will drop unexpectedly.(ie quickly).

When it happened in my system, it was very noticeable. I walked into the greenhouse and
it smelt as if something had died in the tank.

The addition hydrated lime fixed the problem.

It may not be as marked in your system because my system's ammonia was way over
the 8 mark (it was an iridescent green)
None the less it may be time for you to acquire some hydrated lime.

cheers Lou

Lou,

Could the chlorine kill or harm my new establish bacteria? I want to avoid water from the water hose but Texas have a huge drought.

Can't answer that question for you.

In Melbourne I just put the hose into my fishtank when I want to top up.

It depends how much chlorine is in the Texas water supply.

Some one else from Texas would be better suited to answering that question.

Sorry :(

cheers Lou

yes chlorine will kill bacteria.
will it kill all of it ? ...... i doubt it but to play it safe there are ways to get rid of the chlorine

add to the tank with lots of splashing (ok for small topups)

or store it in the sun for a few days then add to system ( better for larger top ups )

or get some air stones into a barrel of chlorinated water and that will remove it as well

but if you have chloramines then its a different ball game, pretty sure theres been lots of debates on chlorine and chloramine on the forum so a search would be advisable..

Cheers
pete

Where has 200 litres of water gone in 14 Days, did you spring a leak? I have underground water in my town so none chlorine in the water. So it's easy for me.

jwhittak98,

Yes there was a small leak in the GB drain but it is fix and it was about 100 liters I lost. I just want to top the water all the way up so that may be another 100 liters to completed.

I do have a lake near my home but I am not sure if I can just go there and collect water must likely is against the law, must things are anyway.

Don't do it as it will probably import unwanted bacteria, mollusks, insects, algae (...) at various development stages.

Ask your local public water facility about the method they use (chlorine, chloramine, ozone...) then act accordingly. Getting rid of chloramine is a not easy.

Topping up water might affect the cycling a bit, but it is better than running dry. Do the top ups in small quantities over a few days.

I am doing the water increase 75 liters at a time, I am adding a water conditioner that said it will eliminate the chlorine and must important chloramine. I am letting the water out side for a day and them adding it to the FT. Lets hope it works. I already added the first 75 liters and it looks like 150 liters should be enough.

Vit, I am assuming that you will be keeping edible fishes. Make sure the water conditioner is suitable for fishes meant for human consumption. Most aren't.
