Hi guys, in the process of getting my IBC set up together (thanks to the ibc of aquaponics), so far having trouble finding food safe IBC's in the area, have scored a freeby from work however it did contain Sodium Hydroxide, printed off the MSDS and details are as follows;
Product name: Hydrex 4709
Ingredient: Sodium Hydroxide <10%, remainder Water
Appearance: Light Yellow
pH: 13.5
SG: 1.4
Solubility: Soluble

I have washed it out at work a million times, just wanted everyones thoughts on using it for an aquaponics system, yae or nae?

Cheers

Nick

It will be fine Raffs... Sodium Hydroxide is a strong base... basically it's "lye"...

But it's pretty soluble... and rincing it a "million times" should have done the trick....

Probably one of the safer IBC contents.... well not in itself perhaps... but cleans up OK..

Nick,

Should be good to go. Has a high ph in delivered form, 12-13, but will neutralise with water washing. Will be so dilute once washed out. Just take care when you remove the lid/drains and wash the frame down to just in case some has spilled and dried. Concentration will increase when it evaporates.

Good luck from another bunbury AP noob.

Dave

Ive used all types of intdustrial grade and toxic IBC's without an issue.

Wash well with chlorine and pressure clean a couple of times, leave your water to aerate for a few days before starting up the system.
