I also can say RS's huge system has both - he has some huge cats in the bottom of his main huge ft and keeps all the tilapia in smaller net cages - the only tilapia that swims with the cats are the runts that he just tosses in to be eaten though the separation may be due more to just a convenience of keeping his breeders under control and the rest separated by size

I guess the catfish here in the South West of Western Australia are an entirely different species because they certainly grow very slowly here.

I'm interested in getting a few channel cats for my new system once its complete. It will be about 300 gallon is this enough volume to raise channel cat or should I be thinking bigger?

I grew 10 trout and 3 catfish to about 3 quarters of a pound each in a 50 gallon aquarium....

I think 300 gallons is adequate for Channel Catfish. I don't think I would recommend growing out channel catfish in anything smaller though but that might be because I tend to let them grow really big.
