I have been having a hard time controlling the height of the water in my grow beds when the pump is running, due to the small over flow 4mm or less. am thinking about makin bigger holes and stikin garden hose in, for the over flow's

my system crashed last week, almost every thing died, maybe too much ammonia (i peed straight into the system), or the salt I used had some anti caking agent in it that might have done some damage...
any way I have flushed the system and I am adding small amounts (20ml per day) of ammonia every day,,,
is it even possible to cycle with out test equ???

4 weeks ago I wrote this And almost gave up on aquaponics, at that time it had been running for almost 4 weeks. I felt that I had failed, my fish had died and then all the plants died. I was dissapointed... :(
Now I feel that my system is motoring along, I am suprised how good the plants look, I think they even look better then the same ones in the garden soil that were planted at the same time. Now I think that trying to cycle with fish is almost a waste of time and dangrous to the poor fish, especially for a first timer who does not want to spend money on a test kit.
I took photos 8 days ago and today so you can see how well my system is running :headbang: :headbang:

Plenty of $ have been wasted on fish by more experienced people as well...

Cycling with fish will work fine, we have started or seen started, many hundreds of systems without any trouble. The biggest fish killer in aquaponics is people getting carried away...

Unfortunately with that small body of water outside, it's always going to be a bit uncomfortable for most fish with big temperature swings. :dontknow:

Well everyone differs, some like ford, some like holden.. We give out golden rules with our systems, just a very simple one page instructions sheet, and like I say, many hundreds of people have started their systems up without any intervention from us, and without any problems..

Everyone is different some people like water testing all the time, I don't... :)

EB. I was referring to people who build there first systems from junk like me and Jamey. Not people who buy proven systems. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

I have made a new larger overflow, before I had to adjust the bottom outlet almost every day.
I also planted my wife's coriander and rhubarb in my system...

I think she is coming around... :headbang: she understands that the plants in my system are getting water every 15 minutes and the plants in the ground are getting water once a day...
