Well looks like the proofs in the pudding. That was the positive sort of info I've been looking for. I'm definitely up for 25 in the bulk order. Facing a hot summer and no fish I was even considering goldfish again just to keep the nutrients up when all the trout come out.

Got them back in April but have only been feeding lightly so as not to overload the tank. If I can get them into the AP at even this size I will be happy cause I know how quick they grow from here if fed what they want :)

What do Jades tast like?

I had my first feed of trout last weekend and didn't like them one bit. Everyone else seemed to enjoy them just not I.

We did them in the oven, wrapped in foil with lemon juice, butter and garlic.

Garlic and Trout don't go well together. Trout flesh is delicate and absorbs other flavors to it's detriment.
My favourite Trout recipe was developed when we went bush walking and fishing down the Coxes River in the Blue Mountains down from Meadlowbath near Katoomba.
We (Margaret and I) would simply split a gum or pine log (about 450mm long) down the centre, wire a trout (normally browns, because they were self breeders in the river and didn't need stocking!) to the split log with a strip of bacon towards the fire, a cut up granny smith apple in the cavity and go out fishing for an hour or so. When we got back, the bacon would be crisped, the trout slowly broiled through with a subtle smoke and bacon flavour, still moist and the apple in the cavity would have almost liquified, adding to the moisture content.

Just beatiful! Orangey Pink flesh and even better if you left in the roe in a female!
Try it without the strong extras, I'm sure you will have a better experience of this fine freshwater fish.
Cheers IanK

Jades are quite oily... indeed they're the highest Omega 3 fish....

They contain a large fat store... which... when bbq'd, fried, smoked... becomes self basting...

Yep - jades do not suit oven roasting because of the fat. I found that the best methods to be:
- remove skin, cumb and fry. By removing the skin the oil layer under it becomes part of the frying process instead of staying there to be eaten
- remove skin, cut into pieces and use in stir fry etc
- remove skin and smoke (smoked Jade is fantastic - fatty fish being so suited to smoking). A warning though - they are hard to keep alight no matter how hard you puff

I always found the fat on the jade flesh pleasant enough in taste, but if eaten in quantity made me feel ill a half hour or hour later.

BBQ. Straight on the BBQ plate with some olive oil for about 5mins each side or till the flesh on the inside turns color.
Smoking is fantastic as well. just make sure you do not run out of smoke.

Got the fish out of the greenhouse system over the last few days and into the ibc tank. Got the ph of the Jades aquarium up to 7 as it was very low and the greenhouse system buffers to 7.2. Didnt want a massive ph change when introducing them.
So, netted out 11 of the 22 and the one goldfish that has been with them all the time and thinks he is a Jade :) , and into the greenhouse system which I salted to 3ppt yesterday.
They sooked for a while in both the aquarium and greenhouse but just before I saw them out in the aquarium and they hit the feed as usual, and also threw some floating 3mm into the greenhouse system and they hit the feed on the surface with gusto. So hoping all is good

I have a 300w heater in the greenhouse system turned to minimum just to keep the temp to a minimum of 18C. But dont think it will kick in very often
