Knock the feed and Seasol off as well... until the algae clears...

Although an occassional light foliar feed might be OK...

Have finally introduced SP's into the system. 15 fingerlings went in yesterday afternoon.

Beautiful afternnon down south for a drive through Ferguson Valley. Now there are two micro breweries, to complement all the wineries. Give yourself a favour and come down and try ythem out. Only 20-25 minutes out of Bunbury.

The fish disappeared tot he bottom of the tank and haven't been seen since. Shy little buggers. No floaters this morning so assuming all is well. Probably in the shade at the back of the tank. Seem to be less wrigglers in the tank and no insects floating onthe surface. Will give them a day or two to get used to their new home before starting the fattening process.

Have set a challange with mates who have shared our delivery to have the least losses. Not shooting for biggest fish yet, as we are all new to this game.

Strawberries coming up well. No show yet from other seeds planted in last week.

No need to worry about the breweries EB as they only open Thurs - Sun.
I think the wineries would be more Fayes style and some of those are open 7 days a week!!

Usual habit for small Silvers is to hide under the pump Dr Bee, so dont expect to see much of them until it warms up a bit.

Being conservative of nature, I held off feeding the little ones for a few days whilst they get used to the tank. The water was clear, but for a few insects that fell in, and the odd mozzy wriggler.

After 2 days in the tank it is murky. Many threads of algae floating about., and no mozzy wrigglers. I have not seen the SP since they went in the tank, but as per Marc's experience, I think they are cleaning up the walls of my tank. They have totally cleaned off one side first, and have worked their way up from the bottom of another. At this rate the algea will be gone by the weekend and I will have to start crushing the pellets coming my way by snail mail.

Since putting a cover over the top so they don't jump out, I have found that some insects are enjoying being out of the wind, rain, sun. But the silly little things bump into the water and get stuck. Plenty of proteins being introduced without the need for pellets.

No movement in ites or ates. Sitting on zero, so happy every thing is stable.

If it aint broke......

Just in case DOCS are reading our threads - Need to clarify, the kids are still being fed. The little ones refered to above are of the SP variety.

The little ones have had to fend for themselves for a little while. Guess they do that in nature.

The 12year old Boxer dog finally broke. Had to get her put down last night. Hind leg Knee badly swollen. No need to put her through any more pain. Been a good dog. Provided two good ears to help all my boys learn to stand up by. Sadly the experience of gold fish dying in the past didn't soften the blow for the kids.

RIP Cybil.

A few days of neglect and the SP's have cleaned the tank walls of algae.
Test kit and food have arrived from BYAP. Levels all good, so have started feeding.

How much is enough, or more importantly too much when you cant see the fish eating. Having the growbed ontop of the FT is handy, but makes it harder to see in the tank.

Started with one large pinch first day. one in am, one in pm next day, No change in levels. Will gradually lift the amount.

Saw some duck weed in local pond. Will grab some and put it in. Should I put it in a seperate tank first, or will it be okay.

Feeding two pinches am and pm, ammonia 0, pH=7.6

Lots of green catapillers eating my brochilli. Pulled as many as I could find off. Crushed the big ones, tossed the little ones in the tank. Any suggestions for safe spray to stop them coming.

Dipel is your best friend
Just placed an order for another carton, it seems the white butterflies are out in force at present. Mix the powder and spray over foliage, reapply weekly and after rains. The product is certified organic and won't harm your fish, safe to eat the veges and no witholding period, won't harm bees and beneficial bugs, it really is good stuff. (Not just because I won the competition and a free trip to New Zealand with Yates   )

Thanks Faye,

Available at hardware stores?

Is it okay to go on lettuce?

Do you still breed BSF?

Available at hardware stores? Yes it surely is.

Is it okay to go on lettuce? Absolutely! Spray on anything that caterpillars eat, as well as in the centre where they especially like to hide.

Do you still breed BSF? It is too cold here at this time, but we do see the odd one. Last Summer we did not have much luck.

Faye,

Thanks, yes they are almost the exact colour of the brochilli. Little ones hide in the middle.
Have left the lettuce alone for the time being.
