Guy's
I planning on building a Merbau deck over my sump tank, but I'm a little worried about the stain getting into the water and causing all sorts of problems with the system or even killing the fish..

has anyone had any first hand experience or can offer some advice??

regards
Matt

Matt,
I have used Modwood for any decking around sumps and fish tanks. Much better option; doesn't twist, split, rot, shrink, swell, or need sealing. Can be screwed, sawn, nailed , planed and shaped. Get the solid board in any colour and in the smooth finish. Works out about the same price as Kwilla or Merbau, but much longer lasting. Don't put any great load on it for prolonged periods unless you place your joists at 350mm maximum centres. Use Stainless steel twisted shank decking nails, predrill the Modwood and hammer fix.
You will have no problems with any leaching or run-off. Mine has been in place for 2 years.

Cheers IanK

+1 for modwood. Its a bit pricey but like Ian said will outlast and natural wood and wont leach anything

Ditto with Ian and Mantis. I put in Timbertech as I liked the appearance better than the Modwood, and was able to get the price down under the Modwood (typical, imported cheaper than local). You might want to avoid the fasteners of each product though, as the price can be higher than the "wood" itself. I just used a jointer on the boards, and screwed them together in between the boards using simple galvanised screws and washers. Of course, if you don't care about having the screws visible, you can just use screws.

Another option could be using something like cypress (which it looks like you are using for the frame anyway), and not finishing it at all.

Matt

I bought mine at http://www.taittimber.com.au/. They carry both the Timbertech and the Modwood.

Cheers

Greg
