I seriously think its a bit late to do anything about GW. Not that nations should not try but I think that bus has already left the station.

Adapt to it, go with it, stop whinging - it's all been done before. This is not the first time good ol' planet earth has been subjected to GW, and they didn't have any technology to help them the last time around.
It's time to take the line of least resistance, live with the conditions we have, instead of moaning about what used to be and trying to undo the irreversible.

Some say we are due for our next ice age... some say the poles will melt and flood the planet... others say nuclear holocaust and nuclear winter which in affect will be the next iceage. So however we look at it, we are pretty much screwed. So we need a way to slow the heating of the earth... we can't reverse it, its affects are inevitable, which means everyone should do what they think is right and chip in and help.

But The Human way is to screw up anything that nature is trying to do even if it is normal and is trying to fix it self. People seem to want to help out and ni doing so screw it up.

Sounds a little sensationalist.. Gee if I chop my head off it will mean I don't die from cancer.

I feel that whether or not we have reached the tipping point for global warming, the point of no return, we still need to try and consume and conserve, and no push things any faster..

Personal opinion- The earth is a balanced, highly buffered system. Several years ago they had to stop trying to measure the effects of GW, because a volcano had erupted and blown more chlorine into the air in all kinds of forms than mankind has released in its history.

People complain about receding glacers in greenland, but some of the things being uncovered are viking settlements with vinyards - hardly an arctic fruit, (unless the vikings were working in greenhouses with AP systems - and maybe Tilapia).

I see the earth having so many buffers that we don't understand yet. Deserts are one of these buffers. They provide large mirrors, reflecting sun's energy back into space, thus lowering the the global temperature.
People talk about saving forests to help oxygen production due to photosynthesis, but 80-90% of the photosynthesis on the earth happens in the oceans. Trees don't have as much growth as prarie grass. If the goal is oxygenation of the earth, why not clearcut all the forests, and plant grains?

Seriously, I don't think that we should clearcut, but I think that EB is right about the sensationalism being a big portion of it. I think that many of the sensationalists in this area are more interested in taxing industry to death more than solving a problem. Some people and industries would be happy to rape the world for a quick buck, but the constant panic about us destroying the planet is getting old. In the 1970s there were people that said that the earth would be destroyed by global cooling, bringing on a new ice age within 20 years. Now, 30 years later we have been bombarded with panics about global warming. All this from a change in temperature of a few degrees. Long before man had harnessed fire, electricity or CFCs, the earth was running in cycles of warming and cooling.

I do think that we have the ability to poison ourselves, but the earth will survive. It has done pretty well in the past.

Think of it as an AP system. The PH may bounce around, but if we just leave it alone, things will balance back out shortly.

greendo, sure the earth has buffering capacity. But considering our current population, a likely result of this buffering is to delete humanity. If you are fine with that. I don't think any serious scientists are saying that all life on earth will die.

Have to keep the blood lines pure hey mon? What about WA...?

i have one point to make, yes the earth has gone through MANY ice age cycles.......but NEVER has the CO2 been near 400ppm, till now.

Point being is that it is higer than it has ever been in ANY cycle.

and considering the difference between an ice age and non ice age is LESS than the currnet ppm amount we are over the average this concerns me.

I somewhat agree NJH and Steve... My belief is almost like the earth is in a big loop and it has a giant RESET button when it gets out of control. It would be interesting if the ensuing ice age, or heat or whatever would cause a 99.9% reduction in human population, almost reducing us back to nothing. Plus with the onset of what ever the earths natural function is, there would be wars over water, resources, electricity, fuel, FOOD...

Al Gores, An Inconvenient truth was mostly rubbish but he had some pretty good evidence that the earth is peaking and ready for its next cycle. By taking core samples, the levels of CO2, and CO have been the highest in the last century. Just by looking at the recent storms, hurricanes, cold pressure systems, Melbourne ... We can tell the world is preparing to balance itself.

Just means the buffering effect will be consequentially larger IMHO...

So if for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, then one can assume we are not going to get away with pumping billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere without a fairly major effect on the planet..

The carbon was trapped under the earth over millions of years now we release it at an astounding rate.. Things will definately buffer, but it's a case of whether humans can still flourish under those buffering conditions as we do now. Personally I think that our western consumer society as it stands today, has it's days numbered.. The party is over and we will have to start adapting to worsening weather conditions, and consume less..
