The Flynn Effect refers to a robust finding that IQ increases in the population by about 3 points per decade. I dare say kids are just learning less practical things these days.

Actually it is IQ test scores that increase. Many signs of intelligence aren't accurately measured by IQ tests. The kids are probably learning subjects that are covered by IQ tests, that's why they score better!

That was Flynn's tentative explanation (sort of), he thought it was environmental factors. Measures of fluid intelligence (problem solving) have increased more than measures of crystallised intelligence (remembering stuff). IQ always refer to IQ test scores, intelligence is not a conclusively defined construct.

There is a lot of debate surrounding this issue, whether we're actually getting smarter or just learning more about stuff that gets tested in IQ tests. Either way, there's really not a lot of hard evidence to suggest that we're getting any dumber. But our culture certainly is changing, as it always has.

Have you ever sat an IQ test.
Atleast half of the stuff you are tested on has NOTHING to do with what you learn at school.

And the basic speed arithmetic that you are tested on I would think would be causing lower scores, as kids are taught to do everything on calculators now.

But one of the tests I had was a page full of yellow and red squares, and yellow and red triangles. You had to cross out every yellow triangle and red square you saw, working in a pattern from top left to right, then next line down, till you either ran out of time or reached the end of the page.
You are tested on how many missed/incorrect crosses and how far through you got on the page.
You cant teach that in school?

And for the record, it took me about 3 hours to finish and its exhausting!

It's not really as simple as looking at the content of IQ tests and comparing them to the content that you learn at school, but yours seems like a reasonable argument.

Of course the things we have to learn are usually a little more complex than just the stuff we learn at school; but if your argument holds, then the Flynn Effect would suggest that we are becoming more intelligent due to biological or hereditary factors. There are valid arguments in support of this view too.

I think they learn things when they are young, but then become teenagers where all their knowledge gets locked away and can only be accessed after they turn 20.

I have two of my own Arbe - what makes it worse than your comment is they reckon they know everything :?

And there is the stuff of documentaries. What an amazing scene that would have made if you managed to film it.

I would have loved to see it just from a "you had to be there" point of view. It might have been the moment that evolution changed directions and wandered off on yet another interesting path.

My all time favourite movie ever. I didn't know it was released in the west.

It includes my all time favourite line, as said by the female lead in her job description as to her subject matter as an artist.

"Just people, and fruit and sh*t"

This movie was shelved and was not going to be released because the test audience didn't get it.

Therein lies the problem me thinks :)

It was never really finished. There are a stack of faults like missing backgrounds in scenes etc

They must have decided to release it as a cult movie :)

Hmmm.

There are two groups of people here.

Those that have been raised by us.

And those that have the responsibility of doing the raising.

You either have kids and are responsible for making them at least .0001% smarter than you, or you live in a society where your vote and your actions are responsible for making the next generation at least .0001% smarter than you.

As with our political representatives, we get the kids we create.

Most of us can only do a little. My little is...

That I have decided that I will never drive past a person who is broken down without offering help in what ever way I can, no matter how busy I think I am.

That I'll answer every question put to me to the best of my ability regardless of who you are, what your politics, or motivation.

That I will attempt to be honest.

That I'll help get your point out, and be heard no matter how much I think you are a *sigh* because I trust that whatever the people think is right, even if I disagree, and the only way to tell what is right is to have all positions put forth, and let the punters decide.

That I'll never dislike the sound of happy children no matter how squeaky they may be.

That I'll stand up for any citizen being beaten in a supermarket isle no matter what the consequences.

-------------

That's all I offer to the world. But I give it my all. I dont have a lot to give except time and persistence.

It's our fault not theirs. We decide what they get fed at home and at school. We decide what they see on TV. We decide what politician rules their lives.

But more, we decide what other people see on TV and what other people have for school lunch. It's not enough to just make sure your own kids eat well.

If we don't, we are failing.

We cant do it properly, but when we don't it isn't the kids fault.
