wouldn't surprise me, either by that enzyme reaction i mentioned or by bacterial means.

life is so complex urea is a partial oxidation of ammonia + carbon then you can get an enzyme that will further oxize the CO to CO2 and leave you back with ammonia. far out.

Another interesting tid bit i found is that some african cichlids that live in ph 9.6 - 10.0 water excrete almost exclusivly urea (usually only done by mammals) oboviously due to ammonias high toxicity at that PH.

better make sure you label that bottle clearly

Random comments on urine (Can't believe I'm wading in... )

Stale urine will definitely turn in to ammonia. Any parent with a diaper pail can tell you that.

One good use for urine (urea) that no one has touched upon is as a mordant for dyeing fiber. The mordant is what helps lock the color from the dyestuff into the fiber, and can shift the color as well. Urea tends to brighten colors, while iron tends to dull it, for example. In pre-chemicals-are-good-for-you times, urine was collected from little boys early in the morning for use in the day's dyeing. (I learned most colonial crafts from Mom. Strange childhood. I can weave on a 4-harness loom, make soap from fat and lye, and weave baskets, too.)

If you eat nasty stuff, it will probably come out in your urine, and therefore into your AP system. Garbage in, garbage out. Unless we're talking heavy metals; they'll probably just build up in your body and kill you.

I'm still not peeing in my AP system, nor will anyone else pee in my system. a) It's gross. b) the chance of fecal cross-contamination is too great for me to risk. Even healthy people have nasty stuff like e. coli in their poo. (Maybe you menfolk have less of a problem there since your plumbing runs a little differently. ;) )

Did it have to be from little boys ;) Points on your abilities in the "arts"

Not nescecarily, almost all things are metabolised by our bodies, often a chemical that "is bad for us" is infact the final metabolite that is damaging, but i get your drift.

Wise choice

Well, I think it was just easier to collect from little boys. And 'early in the morning' was just so you could get larger volume and better concentration of chemicals.

Thanks, Steve. And yes, that's me...more than a few years ago. I used to do crafts demonstrations at one of the local historical houses, plus at the fall crafts festival. In full costume at all times, of course. Fun going to the quickie-mart like that. Act like everything is normal.

Lesson #1: when boiling your wool over the campfire, watch the skirt hem.

Its an old army tradition (too):
a) hardens the feet - gets rid of tinea
b) used on new boots - made them easier to "spit polish" , just don't forget to brushteeth after.
Boots shone like beacons - smelt like sh*t (sorry urine)
