Thats an awful lot of floating feed considering they aren't eating much.. I'd try and cut it back a little, definitely scoop out if you have stuff floating like that....

Hey EB it floats for a while then it sinks and it either gets sucked out but the SLO or eaten by the fish.

Its a lot better now, they have been coming up to the surface for the last 2 days for a feed.

My water is very cloudy do you just use egg whites or the whole egg? Also there is quiet a bit of froth still around :(

Nope, don't use anything... But then we probably don;t put in as much feed, only if they are eating, if they aren't eating we don't throw feed.. And if there's feed in there floating we try and pull it out pretty quickly. I guess doing this sort of thing would keep suspended particles to a minimum over all as well..

Just had a huge nitrite spike... Off the charts!

Ph 7.6
Ammonia 0.5
Nitrite 5+
nitrate 5

Chucked in some feed this morning they were not interested, did the test now have stopped feeding till levels come back to 0. Serves me right for not doing tests more often lol

Been doing water tests on a daily basis.

PH 7.4
Ammonia 0-0.25
Nitrite 5+
Nitrate 20+

Should i be doing a water change at all? Should i just be salting the FT to help the trout/silvers cope with this?

Hey Zman, was it you who had the design for a simple little barrel system with one upright barrel for fish tank, then a half lengthways barrel sitting on top of that as the growbed?

This one? Yes it was me. I will hopefully set it up in a week or so. Once my big system cycles :)

Only thing i have to think about is if im going to use a stand pipe with 100mm media guard or if im just going to have a overflow with a small media guard that connects to the bulk head back into the FT.

Thats the one... :) Think I might try making one in the next few days for a bit of fun... Get me out of the office for a while.... :)

Now I'm trying to think of inventive ways to mark the round bits... Hmmm have a bit of an idea, just have to see if it will work...

Yeah that was a killer, took probably 1 hour to finally cut it properly, little bits at a time.

HAHAH yeah, been about 14 odd days if not longer with the high nitrate/nitrite. I just wish it would cycle already.

Cycling in winter is very slow. I used 600L of mature FT water and 300L of cycled gravel and still not cycled a month later lol.

Oh i forgot to tell you how i got the yabby out of the GB feed pipes. I got some cat 6 cabling. I took off the plastic and got a pair of copper wiring. I stuck the wiring into the pipe at the end, made the yabby grab it and then dragged their asses out :P

It got a bit tricky at the end as they held on to the small "lip" of a fitting hehe

Also this morning i feed the trout. I saw one splash the pellet and it got stuck about 4cm up from the level of the ft on the wall.

I saw a trout that jumped up to try to get the pellet and miss. I thought wow must be desperate for a feed. Next thing i know he tries again and gets it lol.
