This quote taken from Wikipedia, appears that they will not breed with out hormone injection............

Quote:
ReproductionTrout cod reach sexual maturity at 3 to 5 years (which corresponds to about 35 cm in males and 43 cm in females). Trout cod reach sexual maturity at a smaller size than Murray cod, which is an adaptation to the rocky, low nutrient and often quite small upland habitats trout cod were found in. Spawning of trout cod has never been observed in the wild and is not well understood. It is believed to be essentially the same as Murray cod but occurs about three weeks earlier and at significantly lower temperatures in waters shared by the two species. Trout cod are believed to spawn at temperatures as low as 15 degrees in upland rivers, using rocks as a spawning substrate; these are also clear adaptations to cool, rocky upland river habitats. Significantly, and unlike Murray cod, trout cod will not breed in earthen dam brood ponds; another indication that trout cod are a more specialised upland species than Murray cod. Artificial breeding programs being conducted for the species recovery use hormone injections to induce ovulation in naturally ripe fish in spring.

This is from the Vic DSE. I imagine being an endangered species obtaining any fingerlings would just about be impossible anyway.

Reproduction
Douglas et. al. (1994) considered that Trout Cod, like captive Murray Cod, formed pairs and spawned annually, usually in spring (September to November) and probably in response to increasing day-length and water temperature. Trout Cod breeding appears to be stimulated by a rise in water temperature to between 15°C and 20°C (G. Gooley PIRVic unpubl., in Koehn & O’Connor 1990). The fertilised eggs of Trout Cod are adhesive, demersal, opaque and 2.5-3.6 mm in diameter. The adhesive properties of the eggs suggest that a hard substrate might be preferred as an egg-laying site and it is speculated that typical egg-laying sites would include on or in logs, amongst rocks, or on hard clay surfaces (Cadwallader 1979; Koehn & O'Connor 1990). The fecundity of Trout Cod is not known, but 1,200-11,300 eggs have been stripped from individual hatchery broodfish (Ingram & Rimmer 1992). Hatching commences 5-10 days after fertilisation at 20°C, and is mostly completed 2-3 days later. Newly hatched larvae are 6.0-8.8 mm in length and begin feeding about 10 days after hatching.

As troutman mentioned, being protected species they would probably be hard to get a hold of.

They are native and found in the same waters as the Murray Cod. Don't think they are found over in the west at all though.

Sleepy cod, I have seen as an option, I havn't looked into there characteristics compared to Murray Cod either though.
Any one have any info?

Not terribly fast growing... and certainly not that entertaining according to those that have stocked them... literally spend a lot of the time on the bottom of the tank... apprantly "sleeping"...

But Murray Hullam has stocked them in his systems in Brisbane for a few years... and got them to a fair size...

Wouldnt it get too cold for sleepys down here. Dont think they would like tank temps below 10C
Murray wasnt all that impressed with the taste of them either from memory but maybe they were just beat up too much as to their table qualities.
I sort of know the fisheries dude here and might ask him about the trout cod
