Quickest growing eatable fish for Newcastle area.

Trout

Trout of the Rainbow variety, and only during the cold months.

Havn't checked out your system but if you are in a possition to be purchasing fish, do it soon and get trout at no smaller that 150mm you will have them to table by the end of the season. Then get some SP to bore you to death while you wait for next trout season.

If I was at Newcastle I would do jades not silvers for sure. They grow very quickly

No trout available this winter... Jades could also be hard to come by... although Crusty was off-loading some...

New season Jades usually aren't available until after Xmas... and are still an "unproven" species around the area, unless you're prepared to heat...

There's been quite a few that have expressed an interest to triling Jades next summer... and I'll certainly be doing so...

Silvers aren't that boring... they, like all of our native fish that are suitable for the area... just don't grow through winter...

And if you feed them properly, they grow pretty well over summer too.

I thought jade but Newcastle isn't queensland temp. Was thinking were coming into warmer seasons. How do trout go in summer. How long for SP to mature. Not as many options as I thought. Started filling grow beds today. Plant tomorrow or early week than fish soon after- hopefully. Plz help me choose a fish

To late for trout mate as they are a cold water fish. Sounds like silvers are your choice for now and they will survive all year round.

Rupe and others will know better for your area but silvers are a no brainer, but not a quick grower unless you can have water temps above 20C

Have got some info of Rupert all ready.seems to be SP from what I'm hearing. Was hoping not to run any heat if possible. Would like try other species as well. Not sure how much heat would be needed for other fish. Thanks

By the time you cycle the system... 4-6 weeks depending on temps.... you could certainly stock silvers... and possibly Jades...

It will depend on wether or not Jade Perch fingerlings are available that early.. often they're not....

I will be doing a bulk purchase of Jades this spring/summer if you're interested... as to whether or not they'll need heat going into/through next winter... it will all depend on what sort of winter we get... but while they might survive without adding heat... they'll probably stop growing...
