Yeah, he didn't really do it though ! The only ones he really investigated in depth are ones that highly toxic and aren't used anymore  Oh, and MSG, which has never realy been problem, except to those with allergies, and it is a naturally derived product.

This seems as good a BSF expert filled thread as any to highjack. (blame faye :wave1: )

Can everyone wade in on this being a BSF or not. (it's about 10mm long)

The crunchy "lying still waiting for you wings to grow" stage also looks familiar from things I've seen in the garden, but I guess even meal worms look a bit like that for a while.

The one in your photo seems to be lacking white legs as shown below.

The Black Soldier Fly Blog has set up a BSF Locator map (link) displaying the locations of confirmed BSF sightings/populations. If you'd like to contribute there's a 'Report BSF sighting' link in the upper right corner of the map or you can use this (link). Only locations which are submitted with adequate documentation will be used.

This is the same beastie but a little over exposed. The first pic might have been in silhouette.

There are some lighter bands on the legs, but nothing as distinct as yours.

I need to re-establish contact with an old friend who is an entomologist.

This description (link) notes

"Adult - This dusky-winged, nonbiting fly is 15 to 20 mm long. Primarily black, the female's abdomen is reddish at the apex and has two translucent spots on the second abdominal segment. The male's abdomen is somewhat bronze in color.

Your photo shows more than just two light areas on the abdomin.

Thanks BorealWormer

from that link....

"Adults commonly frequent flowers of the daisy and carrot families."

I wonder why?

I didn't think they ate during their flying, mating stage.

Probably as mating sites. There are descriptions at the following links:

I don't believe it is a BSF, however, I'm fairly convinced it's a SF of some sort wo may function just as well for you as BSF.

Let us know !
