Update on latest readings

30-6-11
PH 6.2
AM .5
NITRITE 5
NITRATE 160

5-7-11
PH 6.0
AM 1.0
NITRITE 2.0
NITRATE 160

Ok, so the PH has dropped, added humonia on 3/7, so it is still present

Any ideas????

Yep, your nitrification has well and truely kicked in... and is acidic by nature....

The elevated ammonia level, with the initial dosing of hummonia... has lead to the fast fall in pH....

As you're due to get some trout shortly.... do not add any more hummonia.... and get some "slaked lime"... or "brickies lime"... Calcium Hydroxide... and add a hal a handful to your system to bring the pH back a bit....

You might find in such a small system... that scattering some shell grit through the grow bed would provide a more stable and long term pH buffer... without requiring constant pH monitoring and adjustment....

baking soda can also bring the pH back to 8.3. Have to use it in the pond here to keep the kH up

Bring your pH back a bit Rosey... if you haven't got the fish yet... bring it back to 6.8...

Can I use PH up, or is there a more natural substitute?

"Slaked" or "Hydrated" lime.... brickies lime... Calcium hydroxide...

Personally I wouldn't use "pH Up" or "pH Down"... and I've outlined the reasons in various and numerous posts...

Apart from that... a bag of slaked lime is a hell of a lot cheaper... and will last you forever...

Another alternative is EcoRose, or Ecofungacide as it's now known... Potassium BiCarbonate..... offers both a carbonate buffer to raise pH... and a Potassium boost for flowering/seeding/fruiting plants....

It's also a treatment for powdery mildew... and organically approved...

Sorry just reread other posts above.

Is baking soda and bicarb of soda the same thing?? Can I use that to bring it up and how much would I need to use?

Yes, they're the same thing... and yes Sodium BiCarbonate can be used to raise pH... any "BiCarbonate", by nature, will raise pH...

But it's not preferred as the Sodium levels in your system can over time become elevated... and elevated sodium levels in fish and plants aren't a good thing... especially for human health...

So excited we are finally getting some trout tomorrow.

System has been going great. My Bok Choy are going great guns!!!!

Have salted the tank to prepare for my new babies!!!

Had a disaster this morning, woke up to find that my tropical aquarium had cracked and leaked out nearly 100 odd litters of water all over the floor. RIP my tropical fish. Not good with a hangover and at 6am. Lol
