I checked the site and agree the worm ones look like black fly larvae but what about the squid looking creatures? I didn't see any pic's on the site

the second link down shows the squid lookin things, another stage of the larva maybe? that's all i found

Just read through this entire thread. It came up on a google search for 'spangled perch aquaponics'. Gotta love google. Congratulations on a very neat production system you appear to have going there. I can align with your goal of 'closing the loop' Live on a grain farm in the Wheatbelt of WA and have some water bodies to play around with. Want to enrich them with biodiversity and encourage a largely self sustaining system of production. I don't mind using grain inputs like lupins and canola as they are something I have lots of.

Anyway I would be really interested to hear how your 'experiment' went with the spangled perch. Did you manage to grow them out to the >25cm sizing? And if so did you think you had any that bred? Do you have any tips on those who may be looking to grow them out in an AP system? Feeding, habitat etc?

Those squid looking bugs are weird...

I'm wondering how the spangled perch went too Desertrat.
I'm sure that they are only stunted or slow growing in large densities in ponds and dams because of competition for limited feed.
To me that implies a hardy adaptive fish, being able to survive in the little pools they do. I've caught large numbers in tiny rock pools in creeks that hadn't flown in a long time. (Not that I'm contemplating overstocking in small tanks btw if it sounds like I am!)

I'd love to hear your experience with them.

Hi desertrat, I'm new to both Alice and aquaponics and would love some advice and maybe to come and check out our system if that's possible. I've just inherited a bathtub and have an existing fishpod so am keen to see how I can combine the two for ome delicious veggies.
