I would be changing some water to get the reading down to a reasonable level, just keep the salt level up.

I am having the same problem with a 3 week old barrelponincs system. I have been using the well water that is in front of the house water softener. We use potassium pellets in the softener as opposed to salt. Going to do a water change today since I am loosing a fish every day or so. Will the softened potassium water hurt anything? That combined with the water change should bring down the nitrites to a managable level.

ammonia .25
nitrites 5.0
ph 8.2
nitrates 4.0

salted system a couple days ago, did a 2/3's water change 5 days ago, that is why the ammonia is so low. That was high also before the water change.

Thanks
