I remember reading somewhere where a guy started with Gold fish or red fin then introduced cod.
It was in a dam system but I would think tank would be the same.
I think the preference was red fin as they breed like rabbits and tend to runt as numbers increase.
Gold fish where a little slower and more expensive to start.

Hides, grading & crowding are the only things I know of Geoff....

As you can't really crowd them at the moment... and probably can't grade them either... (even if you could, they're likely to just do the same later)...unless you can get the bigger ones on their own..

So... I guess hides might help... let the smaller ones catch up... :dontknow:

Good chance they'll dash out of their hides to grab some food.... and become a snack anyway...

Isnt there some behaviour thing where cod stop being loners who want a territory and start being school fish once they are at a certain density?

Is this what you are talking about here?

If this is true and not just some dream I had, perhaps a shade cloth divider or something to keep them in school. Squish them up and give them more space as they grow.

Discipline.

Cod need discipline in school these days.

Or not... like I said, it could have been a dream.

What kind of stocking densities would be classed as Crowding in say 1000Lt Round tank??

Wouldnt be hard to Create bio filtration to handle good stocking numbers Couple of IBC's full of Bioballs in the mix and some solids removal, Been Reading into Murray cod a bit lately DPI vic is interested in them becoming the next wave of aquaculture.

Im just thinking summer trout :)

Yeah agreed. I was looking at livefish last night and saw that price, they are only 45mm fingerlings too! Will be looking for another option I think. Anyone know if Glenwaters or Dean@Growfresh has any? Or your mate in Maldon Jamey?

I was thinking more along the lines of putting in whatever number of fish is appropriate, then just putting a divider in so they cant get to the rest of the tank. ie just reaving the rest of the tank empty until they grow into it as you allow them more and more space.

I cant remember where I read the stuff about schooling, but I'll see if I can find it again. I dont think it was aquaponics related.

here...

from http://www.swanhill.vic.gov.au/news/ima ... t_Plan.pdf

The majority of farmed Murray cod produced since the inception of aquaculture
initiatives (in the 1990’s) have been in RAS installations. Murray cod adapts well in
intensive recirculation tank systems. The stocking of Murray cod at high densities
reduces the opportunities for fish to establish territories and consequently they
become a schooling fish. In addition, the grow out culture of Murray cod is
undertaken on a very limited basis, extensively in ponds. In the past, it was originally
thought that Murray cod was unsuitable for intensive, tank culture because of its
aggressive and territorial nature. As a result, Murray cod have been extensively
cultured for grow-out in farm dams and ponds in very small numbers. However, this
technique results in lower yields and variable growth rates compared with intensive
culture.

Not sure who has them Im not ready yet its still too cold for them outdoors yet Temp ranges 9-34 with optimum temps 18-25c

Hoping to get another few tanks setup soon.

Still cant find any info on stocking densities.... Im thinking bout 200 fingerling into 1000L then swapping that out to 100 per 1000L for growout when they get bigger.

Guessing even with a 10-15% Canibalism rate that would be acceptable.

Been thinking about getting 20 odd for a aquarium in the garage to learn a bit about them where i can see the feeding styles, bullying issues and would also allow me to work out a bit better what kind of stocking levels as ill have them in a 300L Aquarium 20 may not be enough... thinking auto feeder dropping food regularly may teach them that feed is always available etc.

Bit curious as why its to cold for Cod ?

I have a farmer mate who keeps them in a couple of dams here in the west quite successfully and his temps are in single digits over winter . While they are certainly more active in the summer we still fish for them over winter .
