£10-14/kg for samphire? Wow, our farmers in salt effected areas need to start thinking outside the box.. Alternative products are the way to go... I spent a bit of time picking salt bush seed at one stage, best $/hour I have ever made, selling it to seed companies. :thumbright:

Just doing a little revision for exams and pulled out a few world production and value figures to add to the seaweed idea discussed above.

Eucheuma seaweeeds, from which we derive carageenan, a gelatine - 2.87Mt worth US$823M in 2009
A lot of this grown by small farmers in the Phillipines and Indonesia.

Japanese kelp (various products) - 4.93Mt worth US$266M in 2009

Japanese Sea cucumber - 102 Kt worth US$355M in 2009

Nori - 554Kt worth US$911M in 2009

on top of those you could have mussels or oysters in the system.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the fish don't need to be anything we're not used to - trout or atlantic salmon !

The fish that were used in the trial were Mulloway and then Cobia, the Cobia were the most successfull, although keeping water temps up was a problem.
The seaweed farm was later enclosed in a green house.
