Man that sucks. I had 45 goldfish die in my system recently. I have no idea what killed them either. Tests were all fine. No noticeable disease. It sucks when you don't know why they died because you can't do anything to fix the problem.

Atleast you still have Jades to keep you going!

Well, not all good news;
The Sleepy Cod are dead now as well!! It comes down to bad fish food, kept too long without being airtight or refrigerated.
Live and learn. Fetid food=low DO=dead fish (quickly!!!)

However, all is not lost . . . the Silvers tasted great!!
Prepared boneless, skinless fillets and pan fried in Butter and Honey with Crumbed Cashew coating, served on Jasmine rice with Pomme Frits, sliced Chorizo and Oiled (AP!) Cherry tomatoes.

was the food noticibly off? mouldy? or was it just that there was too much in the tank? I ask as I have some thats been around a little long, but the fish aren't eating much anyway, so i've not been keen to pick up another bag.

The food is not noticably "off" as in there are no visible signs of mould or dampness; it still has a reasonable "aroma" no real fetid odours or the like, so it must have been a combination of factors. I don't have a high stocking rate, with the natural attrition rate and past HSMs I only had 9 Silver Perch and 4 Goldfish in the 800 Litre Mega-Bin, with 18 Sleepy Cod in the 100 litre Fingerling tank over the main fish tank, so I don't think that I was overstocking. (The 25 Jade Perch and 6 goldies are in the IBC system down the back yard completely seperate).
I didn't clean out the un-eaten floating pellets and this obviously contributed to the system failing the Fish.
The fish looked quite healthy, no brown gills, clear eyes, no signs of stress marks or other scars, all fins in perfect condition and scales bright and shiny. The Gold Fish were plump! but not bloating!
The water tested OK, with Nitrites a bit high, but other than that, no test result, that I could determine, showed any abnormality.
It's just got me beat!
I will let the system settle, still pumping etc. and restock with a couple of Goldies before adding more Silvers or Jades for the Spring/Summer grow out.
I will just have to be more carefull and observant in the future.
