Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but the segment on 4 corners the other night was shocking. I believe live animal export is an outdated, cruel and inhumane method. i personally do not see why we cannot slaughter animals here in australia (using the correct methods for separate religions) and then transport cold meat.

please help stop this by visiting http://banliveexport.com/ and showing your support.
Ben

What I don;t get is the fact that these barbaric methods they are using, were set up by Australian companies, Australians designed and built the angled concrete ramps, the crush's at the top, the whole lot..

So it's a bit harsh to demonize the locals, although some of the ways they were treating the animals was bad, but the method of killing and equipment used was set up by Australians in the industry... :dontknow:

I think they need to look into things this end and find out who is responsible..

Were they built to a price and not to a standard?

How is the meat going to taste from a stressed out animal?

Yep, it is a bit rich when we supplied some of the tools and our own methods were not much different in the recent past. If we want clear our own conscience then we should divert some foreign aid money and invest in some modern facilities in that part of the world.

Agree with EB, shouldn't demonise others just because we see ourselves as more enlightened; makes us sound like a nation of reformed smokers :(

Before everyone jumps up and down about live export maybe a bit of research is in order

The whole live export trade which takes in over 20 other countries (including Japan, China, Mexico, Kuwait, Russia, Israel, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Lebanon and the Philippines) employs 13,000 Australians and has grown to a $1 billion industry.

If live export stops our multi-million dollar trade in supplying dairy cattle to help build herd numbers and expertise in markets such as Russia and China will end and so will exporting of sheep, and we have been down that path before.

Anyone who suggests the animals should be slaughted here clearly does not know anything about exchange rates for the dollar....its never going to happen no matter how much people want it to.

I personally watched the program and yes it turned my guts, people who comitt acts of cruelty towards animals who can not defend themselves are very low in my book :upset: .
All it takes is the use of a bolt gun/stun gun to despach an animal to remedy this situation

On the other side of the coin (and this is no excuse) animals have been killed in this manner for centuries, I think its because we have been so sanitized to the process and that our process facilities are top standard that we forget not everywhere is the same.

Oh and arbe, it doesn't matter if the animal is stressed, most indo families mince or boil their meat, they rarely cook huge slabs of beef like westerners :D

Realistically one would hope that those in a position to do so, would jump at the chance to fix things and improve the image now.. If they can arrange the design, supply and installation of the equipment they've already sent, and they have been working with them to improve facilities and practices. It doesn' t take much to supply and train them in the use of bolt/stun guns...

Yeah, doesn't really do a lot of good to jump on the whole industry.

Ahhhhh, the bolt gun... Fond memories of "No country for old men"

I agree with Nash,
It is all very well for everyone to jump up and down about this issue and the first thing everyone says is ban the live export trade. People have such knee jerk reactions to this but we need to think carefully about how to improve the industry, not ban it. People in the bush who rely on this industry have questionable political clout and if all the city people jump on the band wagon you can bet polititions will as well as they can see it will get them a lot of votes, then pop bang there goes an export market finnished.
People need to remember that exports of all types fuel our economy, without exports we would be screwed so we had better look after these industries.
We all love our cheap imported good but spare a thought for those people exporting (bringing real dollars into our economy) that are struggling with our rising Aussie dollar.
End of rant. :wave1: :wave1:
