A friend and fellow missionary here in Botswana is going to the states for a nine month furlough. He has about 300 tilapia that he will give to me since he doesn't want to run the system while he is gone. The problem is that the fish have been stunted from the water being well below 60 degrees F for many months. The fish didn't grow at all in about six months. If my system has water in the upper seventies will they continue to be stunted or will they start to grow normaly? I am not worried about cross contamination since they will be isolated in a seperate system at my place.

any thoughts???

Tough call MM - think you just going to have to give it a go and find out.

There's more than one reason for stunting though, so are you sure it was the cold ? Where/how did he originally source the fish ?

yeah, that is a tough call.. they eat much less when it's cold, so that could be a factor.. might as well give it a go..

He isn't leaving for the states for a nother couple months so i got about a dozen of his fish and put them in my aquarium AP system inside where i keep the water at about 30 degrees. I have had the fish for only about a week and already i have seen growth. I will give it a go on an outside tank when he leaves.
