like this. the water above the SLO out piep it the water you are adding to the volume of the sump. the water below is to keep the yabbies alive. if you have 200L 'avove" the outlet pipe you effective sump size is 1200L

Just an update on the system i am designing,(well you guys pretty much designed, lol)

Got 2 more IBC's,so the system will be

2 x ibc's sump = 2000 litres

2 x ibc's fishtanks = 2000 litres

1 x large trough growbed 1900 litres
1 x small through growbed 400 litres
2 x cut ibc's growbeds 800 litres
1 x wooden growbed 600 litres = 3700 litres

sump 2000 litres
fish tank 2000 litres
growbeds 3700 litres

should be right with these ratio's,

thoughts.

i personally would be happier with a extra 1000L sump. remember you need water in the sump to cover the pump at the end of the cycle, and to allow for evaporation, the more the merrier!
or split the GBs and run 50/50 CF/FD :dontknow:

Got 2 more IBC's,so the system will be

3 x ibc's sump = 3000 litres

2 x ibc's fishtanks = 2000 litres

1 x large trough growbed 1900 litres
1 x small through growbed 400 litres
2 x cut ibc's growbeds 800 litres

Done and about turn, going to use my trough (1900 ltr) as a sump/yabbie tank.

here's what i propose,would love your thoughts,

1900 ltr trough sump,(no digging as its only 500mm high) 1900 ltr
3 x IBC's fish tanks 3000 ltr
6 x ibc 500 ltr growbeds +1 small trough 600 ltr growbed 3600 ltr

Really keen to try yabbies, and just think the large area of the trough will be good for them.

also it takes away the need to dig the sump hole,as my soil is hard bedrock.

Pretty sure, thats settled now, unless you guys have a critical reason why not right.

It also gives me scope for more growbeds,

Also like the idea of 3 fish tanks,so i can have different fish in each tank.

also my fishtanks and sump will be inside my shed,so wont get as hot in the summer, and cool in winter, giving a more stable temp, the shed has a open front,so heaps of ventilation, and even morning sun.

Pretty sure your sump is too small, especially if it has a bigger surface area.

You could run a second smaller pump 24/7 and run constant flood in a couple of the growbeds. CF beds do not effect the sump level and a lot of plants love the CF

Thanks mantis,
will run a couple constant flood.
with constant flood,do i just have outlet about 1/3 of way up from bottom of growbed, and simply run straight through to sump, leaving a third always full.
And do clay balls as medium work better in constant flood ,than gravel.?
