Yes I think flying is okay. Flying is the quickest mode of transport that allows people to connect, people to explore and most importantly people to experience different cultures, lifestyles, poverty, wealth, etc. I don't think it is fair to just look at it from a carbon emission perspective.

I think flying is a privelege and pretty exciting. The average Australian doesn't fly as much as your friends in the first post but I guess the current prices make it easier for more to do so. Personally I would much prefer to travel overland, you get to see more and enjoy the ride but nowadays I would rarely find the time to get anywhere and back again within a holiday break, isn't Perth one the most Isolated capital cities in tne world? A few years ago I travelled overland/sea from Osaka to Bangkok which was amazing but had to fly the rest of the way because of time.
You can only go so far though, would you prefer 20,000 cars and busses driving back and forth to the pilbra and other mining regions evry week. As for kids on the plane, they would have been an interstate team, training and fundraising for months for an adventure of a lifetime. Nothing wrong with that.

Not. One of, THE most remote capital cities in the world :(

Wait a minute - There's no such thing as an unnecessary vacation

Seriously though just looking at the carbon footprint ignores what the trip is really about - seeing something new, having new experiences, getting new ideas or objects and bringing them back to improve our own lives. It boils down to cost vs benefit but we aren't always good at recogizing all the costs or all the benefits.

We fly maybe once a year, and always pay the off-set option (which is probably a bit of a rort) and anyway, I plant trees for a living.

The thing that bugs me about the whole carbon debate is how so many peoples arguments don't hold together. For example how can our economy lose jobs by taxing carbon? When we pay tax the money dosnt disappear. Surely any jobs lost will be balanced by jobs created?

On the other hand its been warm before, Greenland wasnt called green by the vikings because they were sarcastic. Every graph of warming I've ever seen put up by people trying to convince me of human induced climate change doesnt show the late germanic iorn age warm period nor the renaisance mini ice age.

I'm guilty of that too. For example I won't let my wife get a clothes dryer but I just bought a 4wd for "work".

It's more the crazy opulence side of things that I don't like, things that are unnecessary.. Having your wedding in Bali so then all of the friends and rellies have to fly up there as well... And the kids that were on the plane I was on, were just school teams, all from the same Canberra school, not elite athletes.

And to answer your questions Stuart..

http://www.grist.org/article/greenland-used-to-be-green

And which graph?

Here's an article about why the mini ice age doesn't show up on the graphs from new scientist magazine, only I don;t have a subscription so can't read the whole thing...

That was not very helpful :( If anyone has a link with the actual article I'd really appreciate it.

Eb do you remember the thrust of the article?

EB, I've got a NS subscription. PM me if you want my login details (and don't tell NS if this is illegal under the T & C I signed).
