Canister filter was playing up last night so I turned it off, and by this afternoon ammonia was down to a trace. Pulled the canister filter apart and found two broad bean seeds that had been scooped up with the clay balls I put in the filter plus this fella in the bottom layer of the filter. Mystery solved :)

Ammonia readings high again in this tank, and checked the ph with a kit that goes down to 5, and its 5 or below.
Have a bag of shell grit hanging in the tank now to hopefully slowly raise the ph

Q. Missus has some stuff called Ammo-Ex which is meant to get rid of ammonia , is this safe for edible fish??
It looks like some sort of small stones that you are meant to put in a bag in your filter

might be the same as zeolite, which means that it will remove ammonia, but then if you dont take the rock out it will re-release all the 'amsorbed' ammonia back into the tank. at that PH i owuldne worry about it, ammo wont be poisonous until it is seriously high. maybe just salt for the nitrite spike to come and wait for the ph to raise itself :dontknow:

At 5 or lower you system will crash
the bag of shell grit will only work when everything else is ok just bring it up slowley with slacked lime [ that white stuff the brickies use] just one teaspoon at a time test 2 hrs later
In my 5000 liter system i use1/2 cup at a time
Dont use the other stuff

Got three filters running on it now and the fish are happy and healthy looking. Trying not to feed too much as they will have to be in here for a while yet.
One of the filters is a 30L pressure filter that is running off a small 1000L pump. It has a UV filter and I am wondering if I should turn this on or is there no real benefit??????
Will get some pics of the fish on the weekend I hope

depends if the tank is green with algae? it will kill of the algal bloom, or disease if your fish are sick. otherwise i would just leave it off
