njh, your spot on with the acid, and from the MSDS at her lab its nasty stuff.
From memory Hydrofluoric acid seeps through the skin and into your bones causing them to breakdown rather quickly.Of course you dont actually notice the bone problems until its to late.
P.s the missus has a fischer and pykel mmmmmmmmmmm!!!
jtjf, If you make a cage for around the aerator no fish could get in.

As for the barrels I will find out exactly what has been in them and read the MSDS for them. That way I can find out the best way to clean.

Axl I missed your post"what fun would that be"
Do you remember the art exhibition(I think in France) at beginning of last year. Some arty dude placed 10 blenders on stands with a goldfish in each and invited the public to throw the switch.
Three got milkshaked before it was put to a stop.

I know its causing psycological scarring but weve got our 3yr old and our 7yr old believing in Aunty Jack when they play up we just suggest that well drop them off to Aunty Jacks for pulling into line works a treat. Unfortunatly the 7yr old starting to twig but for Wil Good Old Aunty is every childhood nightmare rolled into one(Cause she'll rip his Bloody arms off!! as he says).

The problem with commercial HCl is that it often contains considerable HF (hydrofluoric acid) which is a cumulative poison.

NJH, i actually agree with you, but seeing the HF will be converted into a F salt such as NaF or any other number of F salts once it has been put into the system and soooo many people believe that that particular F salt is good for them then hey, good PH in your system and strong teeth  NOT.

Seriously though, thanks for the info, was not aware of the HF impurity in the commercial HCl (its probably listed on the side in the analysis though, yeh?)

Fluoride is a cumulative poison... It does depend one what HCl you're buying - I'm assuming you're just getting muriatic acid for bricks and industry and the like. If you were getting food grade HCl (for souring things) then obviously this wouldn't be a problem.

njh,you are right the HCI is for industry(assy lab) which is why the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) comes in handy.
Unfortunately i cant get my hands on the barrels until next week but will find out everything then.

the worst we got was being threatened to be dropped off at sunbury.

Apparently there was some type of boarding school there............being threatened to be dropped off at a boarding school entrance after dark and never see your parents again was enough.

Worked well till we figued out how much it cost to send a kid to boarding school...............Then we knew it was only a threat! LOL
