Anyone ever heard of it?

Just received a pretty crappy photocopied sheet in the mail saying how great it was for aquaponics, hydroponics and aquariums..

Cleans your pipes, gets rid of algae, breaks down organic wastes, lowers ammonia levels, mineralizes all organic wastes, aids fish health, and more......

Quote:
LYSOFOSS Ideal for fish ponds, aquariums, aquaculture, dams, etc. Contains selected strains of bacteria for biological filtration, silt, sludge, odours and algae control. Lysofoss will decrease ammonia and hydrogen sulphide production, while increasing dissolved oxygen. Decreases organic matter and sludge on the bottom of the pond, thus producing clear water and controlling algae blooms. Lysofoss can be used as a bio-filter in every pond, regardless of water condition. Application may vary according to pond condition, use 100g per 1 square metre surface area for average applications. Available in 250gm, 500gm, 1kg, 2kg.

Made by someone with only a phone number and PO box "oceania research international"...

Hmmm sounds fishy to me....

May be not as fishy as you might think? I have just done some work for a company called Resourcefull Recycling who are doing some trials processing fish waste to turn it in to fertilizer etc.
I mentioned Aquaponics to them and they said they could produce some stuff that they know is used in Aquaponics overseas, which does the same as mentioned above. They are going to make some up for me to try out, so I will keep you posted.

Are they an Australian compnay.... couldn't find anything about them....

As to "some stuff that they know is used in Aquaponics overseas".... I figure such a product would have been mentioned on one of the many forums... particularly if it's in wide use...

I've not come across any references to anything... other than the "Rid-X" product mentioned by someone... and i wouldn't touch that with a barge pole either....

Why the need to add any "fertiliser"... or "bacterial" concoction.... to a fucntional AP system???

Exactly!!!... everyone knows if you put some thought into the positioning of your system in the first place... ie: underneath a coolibah tree... that all the Drop Bear poop will provide more than enough nutrient!
:thumbright:

No, the name is only a trading name.

I will find out more when I get the stuff in about a weeks time.

What I gather, it is a concentration of the right type of bacteria or microbes to do a given job, so if it reduces algae, bio slime and other solid waste matter it can't be bad for a system?

What type of "bacteria"... to do what "given job"... and what conditions do the bacteria require to exist??

Can these conditions be found within a bottle??

You shouldn't have an algae problem, if you do.. shade the tank... algael growth is a factor of sunlight on nutrient rich water....

Bio-silme/film.... why is this a problem??

Other solids wastes... you shouldn't have any if your filtration capacity is sufficient... you have worms in your grow beds... and as long as you're not over-feeding....

The reduction of "algae, bio slime and other solids matter.... suggests the product is more a method applicable to septic tank systems...

Your AP system shouldn't be either a septic system... or considered to be one....

Wonder if it's made from snake oil.... frankly I just don't see the need... and potentially there's unknown effects on possibly both the fish and plants.... from unknown "components"....

Why do you think you have the need to use the product... is your system having specific problems??... :dontknow:

I am actually going to try it in one of my Aquariums which has a sump so I can see if it makes any difference to the solids build up in the filter, the tank also suffers a bit from excess algae.
I will find out more information on the product when I get it.

If they're just a trading company.. rebottling another product... ask them for an MSDS...

In fact ask them for some testamonials... from all those over-seas aquaponicists...

Actually... ask them to spell aquaponicist....
