Gives it a nice rustic look BUT I would be plugging up the man hole with something and making sure that rainwater dosent run off the roof and into the tank. I lost some fish a few years back when rainwater ran off a roof of corrugated iron and into the tank and I know of several others who have experienced the same. Boris for one springs to mind.

Love the look of the tank in a tank! I wonder how it would affect water temperature????

Thanks to all the comments.

All comments and advice greatly appreciated as we have a lot to learn.

Just to answer a few comments.

I would however split some garden hose or black poly pipe and place it over the cut edges with silicon and wire to stop cutting hands etc :

Agreed that the edges need some protection. We only finished the install about 7.00pm last Sunday and ran out of time. We also need to fis the tank so it looks straight (bit rusty around the bottom). This will be a job for tomorrow....

Are you really going to get rid of the tank in a tank? It looks like it will work better than most other systems to me.

Hmmmm. It was only supposed to be temporary, however you got me thinking......

I like the tank in tank. Put a little mesh on the old tank and you can grow some vines over it.

Now that is a good idea, hadn't thought of that. My main concern is the heat inside the tank in Summer. However, vines growing over the top would help greatly.

This is good advice, thankyou. I'll be hitting the tank hard with the silicon gun tomorrow. Already have a tempory cover over the manhole. Will make it a bit more permanent tomorrow with some rivets and silicon.

As discussed up the page, I have the same concern in Summer and we were going to ditch the tank before Summer. However, due to the positive comments by many others in this thread, I think that it is worth reconsidering. Some vines as suggest by others or other shade structure just over the tank may fix the problem.

Today we zipped down to Pemberton and picked up our Rainbow trout. We arrived down there an hour and a half early and lucked out because they had part of the main street blocked off and were having a street fare. The boys had a great time on some of the rides.

The fish all survived the trip OK. We asked for 40 however I think that they gave us 45 plus. Hard to count the little buggers. They cost us only a $1.20 each, bagged and boxed ready to go. We thought that was good value.

Photos of todays adventure below.

Have you got a cover over your tank to stop the trout from jumping out?

Very good point... Water returns back to the tank will seem to be upstream to them, hence jumping out there.. most likely... and if you have dogs or birds, you might never know that they have jumped up because they might be picked up before you know it...

and if you have birds that fish, maybe you might have none left after a few weeks... just ask Faye at BYAP...

That is a good point! We stand bricks up around the edge of the pool because they jump clean out otherwise...even with the bricks the odd one will 'find' any small gap and manage to leap out!

You need some sort of cover over the FT because we have kookaburras and blue kingfishers that turned up here just after the FT was installed. Don't use mesh too small because we also had a slender tree frog take up residence over Summer, and it needed to get in and out. I've got some spare fencing mesh if you need a short piece, join two together with fencing clips to make the cover foldable.

Hello all.

Re Cover for the tank.

For the first night we had some shade cloth draped over the tank. Don't think we lost any.

Today we layed some 50sq weld mesh right over the tank and draped the shade cloth over the mesh, covering about 80% of the surface area. Hopefully we should be OK.

Today we also planted out the grow beds. Details and photos to come.

Regards
