Hay what happened to JT? "Oh I think the tomato plant is holding him hostage after he threatened to pull it out."

Hi JT,
Glad I found your thread. I read all of it. Sweet build and lots of info.

I have a question. I'm going to quess, by your photos, that you have 2' pathways between your beds and your walls? Just wondering as I'm building a hoop house and I haven't decided on the layout yet. Any suggestions or changes you would make?

BTW, I have a small outdoor barrell system now to compare with my dirt garden... I think I've been infected with this aquaponics thing. :geek:

welcome to the addiction

my first small 8 x 10 greenhouse was laid out poorly... I couldnt get around the beds and was really cramped.... as you can see from the last tom pictures, even with 24" walk-ways they can take over... so make sure you can easily reach all parts of the GB's

Hey all.................

finally the tomato jungle has been tamed, I will be replanting in the next few days...

I cut a few tops off and re-started them in another location..... the kellogg breakfast yellow giant toms.... so want to keep that one going....

will be planting less toms as I am narrowing down which heirlooms I want to plant in quanity

the dirt garden has been planted a little

got a bunch of toms in the green state.. and just waiting for them to turn so I an pull those also.....

all the peppers turned yellow when the PH got down below 5 (my fault) so they will come out as soon as the replacements are ready... sometime this week

my nitrates should start to head up.... havent had any show up in a year... the jungle of toms were using them all up.....

ammonia is up for the first time in 8 months or so... but just to .25

ph is still dropping if left along.... I'm keeping it around 6.8 this morning was down to 6.2

sold a starter kit Yeah!!!!! got a class at the end of the month and still messing with the GH adding and improving things...

so much to do and so little time

JT

Sounds like its time to hang a paint strainer bag of shell grit in your sump tank or something to keep the pH from requiring too much of your attention. :flower:

Yup.....

will have to experiment on how much to use..... I really dont want to buffer to 7.6-7.8

will probably add some tomorrow..... maybe a half a bag to start and see what happens

That's the beauty of the paint strainer bag method (or pantyhose, some like this better since if both feet are too much perhaps just one foot of buffer will be just right) If the pH gets higher than you like, pull the bag out, when pH starts heading to your "doo something number" drop the bag back in. That way you might never need to use the stronger faster acting pH adjusters.
