I bought 30 rainbow trout Saturday afternoon & let them go in 1000 ltr tank, water parameters all fine. Gave them a feed Sunday about 1/2 handful of 5mm pellets.
This evenings test results
Ammonia 0.25 - 0.5
pH 7.4
Nitrite 0.25 - 0.5
Nitrate 20 ppm

I have salted to 2 ppt & wont feed for a couple of days.
Is there anything else i should do like water change or just wait & see what happens?
I haven't had trout before so don't know what to expect.
Also How much feed should I be giving the fish when feeding resumes? They are approx 120mm long.

Todd

Wait until parameters drop. 5mm pellets might be anbit big for the trout. Also they will need a few days to adjust to the feed your using before they start hitting it hard...

I recon 5 mm pellets are to big for 120 mm fish
other wise all else seems ok
No no water change unless amonia spikes

The pellets were what the trout farm at Macclesfield gave me with the fish. Said they were being fed 9mm but I opted for the 5mm instead. Will crush it up a bit when next feeding.
Thanks for the advice will just keep an eye on things for a day or 2

where did you buy them from? they are good size to be getting, I am feeding mine ( 75mm) 6mm crushed down to about 2mm. obviously some pallets remain large and the fish seem to take the big ones as well the small ones to maybe feed size is not too critical as long as they can fit it in there mouths!

If i was in that situation i would feed a desert spoon full once a day and keep an eye on the ammonia
When the others drop just ramp up the feed
as far as how much its best to just under feed than over feed i just drop pellets in till they arent interested

So is it high ammonia that is the greater evil & the high nitrites not as bad, & once the ammonia readings settle down its ok to give a little feed
