US toilets often have much more water volume than Aussie equivalents

I wonder why that is?
Could this be the first scientific proof that americans are full of sh*t? :bootyshake:
Sorry, I could not help myself there! :laughing3: - no offense intended.

And much less water volume than South African toilets (particularly Cape Town's) :D

If you want to post a witty comeback, you're gonna have to do better than that! :support:

In South Africa, they steal the toilet as you turn around to wipe! :bootyshake:

the #1 thing that keeps the tank clean are the fish themselves.

100 % agreed, less of a problem as fish grow up, except they make more mess

if I take out the SLO and let it overflow normally the fish still kick up all the solids and the tank stays clean.

Not for me, bottom gets a layer of solids pretty fast without the SLO device. I even tried with incoming water just dropping in - no direction to it - and bottom got messy, not bad but was building up. I have to increase water flow a bit yet so that might help

Fish definitely make a big difference is the settling properties of a tank.

In a new tank empty of fish, I can see the effects of creating a "swirl" action from my spray bars and after several days I could even see fine sediments making circular patterns in the bottom of the tank. If I had several large catfish in that tank, I bet they would have it all stirred up to the point that I wouldn't be able to see anything accumulating on the bottom. but if I only put one or two sedate catfish in there. They would probably choose sides and hang out sedately in their territory and some settling of the solids may happen again.

I've found in my large system, the SLO pickup being off to the side of the tank has still picked up all the solids out of that tank just fine, I generally have 15-100 fish in that tank and have never see solids build up. If I left the tank empty of fish and the air off for a week I might see some settling.

Does the filter plate necessarily have to cover the entire bottom of the tank to create the negative pressure area for the SLO to work?
