Thanks for that Steve... without knowing it you've just forced a major re-think/re-design of my pending system LOL

Seriously though, just the sort of thing to know, and this forum is worth its weight in gold for the cross-pollination of ideas

;) no worries.

Personally i found cont. flow GREAT for a small system under say 100lt grow bed, but distribution becasme a problem in the bath tub.

Technically the water flows continuously in my bathtub setup, but it floods and drains with lkb auto syphon MK1.5

Now you see, If my wife did not nag the only thing I would get done would be related to AP (I will deny it if you tell her! ;) )

Steve,

I picked this up from a post you made in Muzza's thread.

Quote:
comfrey (x1)

While, the benefits of using comfrey in all sorts of situations are well-documented, I wouldn't leave the comfrey plant in your grow bed too long......if the plant likes what it's getting, it will grow to be up to a metre in diameter.......and the roots are really aggressive. When you pull the plant out, any small pieces of root will become plants.....quite quickly.

In my view, you'd be better off using a specific container....like a satellite pot or a tub.....to grow your comfrey.

Quote:
GD, you lost me on that one. Which plant?

I haven't visited your thread for a few days so I was probably referring to the discussion on Azolla.

Every now and then, I'll be reading a thread from a few pages back and I'll make a post without realising that the thread has moved on several pages and that readers of my post will probably be wondering what the hell I'm talking about.

Gary

Garry - I tend to agree that long term there is not a great deal of benefit in growing comfrey in an AP system in that one of its major advantages is pulling nutrients up from deep in the soil via its tap roots. Regarding the likelyhood theat it may become weedy in the sytem - I think it is unlikely. Any root that is left may strike as you say - but in a gravel system it should be easilly removed when it sticks its head up. On a similar note - do any of you have sweet potato in your soil gardens. Last year (or year before) I put in botht he orange and the white fleshed (purple outside) varieties - got heaps and heaps of tubers. I let the white one go a bit rampant and eventually pulled it all out to make space for other plants. Do you think I will ever get rid of it - no. Every little bit of root or tuber that is left in the ground has become a plant. I am continually pulling them out. Doesn't worry me that much, but in future I would definitely contain it better. The orange one took a lot longer to take hold - so I didn't get a huge number of tubers last year. Have heaps now though. For me sweet potato is a staple vegetable and to have a constant supply for free is excellent. In my view it is what home gardenning is about. You can't hope to be fully self sustaining (unless you want a very boring diet) - but if you grow all you staples plus some other stuff, you are doing pretty well. Sorry to go off topic Steve/GD.

Quick off topic on that line. My aim is to grow AP tommies, cucumber, capsicums and lettuce all year round in the GH. That would be our 4 staples. Just add a cow for milk and cheese, chooks for eggs and meat and a few kangaroos and we would be set.
