wondering if i should dispatch the lot..... ditch the media, sterilise the tanks with boiling water or steam and the start again, cycle it up and get new fish

I know my water temps have dropped dramaticaly over the last week and SP have gone off the feed completely, mainly due to the over night temps. I'm trying to remember back to last year when the temps started dropping I think I lost a few my self.

You could try a strong salt bath, but you essentially have to do each fish individually - however, that won't clean your system.

No deaths today....

Changed out 80% water yesterday, with stuff from my Trout system.

Temp 17.2
Amm 0
Ites minimal trace
Ph 7.5
not sure on ates.... test still not here....

I'v also changed it so now half the water go's into the FT and the other half recircs through filter, due too thinking the may have been too much current with the barrels water being turned over 5 or so times a hour now it would be around 2, and the recirc from Sump-filter will help with filtration too i'd guess.

Will keep posted on progress

I would have thought that if it was Gill Flukes you would have seen the fish flashing well prior to any deaths occurring. Silvers are weird creatures and often seem to drop dead for no apparent reason. I often get a few deaths when fish are moved into a different environment and also at the change of seasons particularly in autumn when the water temps begin to drop.
The recommended treatment for Gill Flukes is a salt bath of 15ppt for 1hr and repeated the following day.

i did notice a couple flashing the other day, the bigger ones.... however none of the bigger ones have died as of yet.....

hope to see them stay steady now, going to insulate it all and add a 300w heater in the next week or so, try regulate temps to stay around 18-19c

sitting on 17.2 today, gave them a very light feed tonight. see how they go

Change of season, and marked difference between day & night temps that occurs in that seasonal transition.... were my first thought as well Troutman...

But the deaths seemed to be occurring across systems... even the indoor tanks...

In my experience... it's usually the smaller fish that seem to succombe.... which is why I don't like to take small Dec/Jan spawn...

You'll struggle to keep the temp much higher than that overnight... in even a 1000L tank... with a 300w heater...

Once the water temp drops much below that... getting it back up seems to be even harder...

its only 400ish Litres all up rupe, no IBC yet, prob not going to worry about the IBC this year due to the Loss of the silvers theres not many left in there now. Its also in a well insulated garage (part of the house) so i hope that i can keep it regular.

wouldnt mind 25 jades in another barrel but we will see how the rest of these silvers go for a month first......

No Deaths again this morning..... fingers crossed......
