Well even with the loss of silvers and not wanting to fix anything thats not broken, the trout system had undergone a rapid change....

Due to Siphons playing up and my worries about deadspots in the CF beds i have changed the whole thing to Timed F&D, Running a bit differnt than normal due to system size, difference in bed sizes etc.

i'm running a 15/15 cycle, every 6h i run 30 off 30 on to do a full drain & flush.

all seems to be good, no more sticking siphons plus the added benifit of only running my pump 50%.

Any new system will be Timed F&D due to the nursery systems progress, cycle time and growth, also the ease of setup and reliability.

I've found it hard to go past the simplicity and reliability of such a setup...

I actually wonder if the Timed F&D works well due to the retention time of water/media, BUT also the fact that the Fishtanks retention time also, allowing some amount of ammonia build up before getting flushed out to the Beds, in turn the beds get more ammonia to break down in every cycle, thefore more neuts per cycle.

rather than a constant flow through the tank/beds which would create a base level of ammonia and neuts flowing.

food for thought........

Well system is still ticking along nicely, 52 Rainbows still kicking along very well.....

System now runs on a 15/30 cycle, and iv got another pump in the FT that comes on for 1h twice a day to swirl things around and keep the solids from building up.

I changed the smaller SLO bottom back to the Big one now

Looking good Jamey.
I will stick with autosiphons and constant flood beds with my new system as sump isnt big enough for timed flood and drain me thinks.

That's an interesting idea Jamey, at least no one can complain that the herbs are in their way. Is it an exhaust fan or air con outlet, eg sucking fan or blowing air?
