Went fishing the other day with a new toy... A throw net.... Love the way these nets work, with a throwing ring at the top to make life easier, and link lines running do wn to the weights, so that when you pull it in, it creates pockets to hold the fish..




Beautiful day for it, but my mate Luke and I are only beginners.. Turns out that we were throwing it wrong the whole time, only discovered it when we got back and watched the instructional DVD for a second time...

But we managed to get a few ok throws in, and we scored the following fish:

Two different varieties here, I think the ones closest to the fingers might be young mullet, the top ones I just don't know, they had lateral fins unusually high up their body and the top of their body was almost a squarish shape, a little like gardie..

Luke ate one of them raw, still kicking... He laughed at the net, saying that if I managed to catch anything at all, he would eat the first fish raw.. Man was I happy when the first fish came in.



We got a few, and a big crab, had to let the crab go though because it's illegal to catch them that way.. I'm keen to give it a go again, especially now we know the right way to throw it. Also now we have figured out that you don't just throw randomly, you have to have your polaroids on and spot the fish before throwing, otherwise you just get a sore arm for nothing.

Next time I'm going to try eating them too, this time they were just dog food, but I reckon they might taste a little like sardines..

Ive been throwing a net since about the time I could walk (used to have a little 3 footer as a kid) and it only gets easier. I have a big 25' diameter net that I use to catch mullet...on a good cast the net gets so heavy that you have to tie it to a ball hitch and pull it out with a truck! 1 cast, 1 truck bed full of 1-2' mullet. Better hope you have a smoker!

The big ones are a wee bit more difficult to throw though. Whatever you do, don't be one of those people with the net in their mouth and all that jazz. There are many ways to throw a cast net, and you don't have to have the net in your mouth to be successful.

Home in South Carolina, we use the cast nets for bringing home shrimp. We would bring home a 75 quart cooler full every night! Casting off the front of a 14 foot bowrider boat. Now that's a fun night!

I'd love to give the net a go for prawns/shrimp but most of them around here are in rivers and estuaries and we aren;t allowed to use the nets there. Man I tell you, there are some pretty strict rules on net fishing, the exclusion zones are huge. The rules say, "you can fish anywhere in Western Australia except the following places" Then over 1/2 of the rule book is filled with all the places you can't fish..

Would love to get some decent mullet one day, whenever I go to the coast I'll be chucking the net in the back of the ute just in case.

So strict in fact, we cant use cast nets in VIC

dont forget here in wa you have to have a netting license to use throw nets

Oh yeah, definitely got that... Fisheries always seem to be onto me so I never risk it..

In queensland we are allowed to use 4inch square hooks if you dont get caught heheheh...

but on a serious note if they allow trawlers up our rivers then we should be able to do what ever we want... I live in a great area we can fish and put pots in and throw nets all we like and the only thing we have to make sure of is the bag & size limit.... we dont need any license unless we want a boat with over 4 hp motor

i use my throw net manly when i go to broome barra fishing use the throw net to catch poddy mullet and red claw barra cant resist live baits

We used them for catching cherabin up around Derby....and the best lay down bait was hotel soap...draw them in from everywhere

I think I look a bit manly when I throw the net too.. Went this morning before work, more for throwing practice than anything else, caught a fair few under size crabs, a small flounder and a little mullet.. Didn't take long to get a sore arm..

No use blaming the net for that
