Unfortunately there is nothing else i can use. In NSW metro there hasnt been any decent rain for months.

Tap water is in the FT at the moment and hopefully degas before i chuck in a few goldies.

do a search for vitamin c chlorine on the forum. i remember doing some calculations years ago.

the has been many threads on de-chlorination.

i distinctly remember doing the maths for both chlorine and chloramine........cant find it.

i thought you fixed the search function?

You can use a .5 micron carbon block filter to get out fluoride, but only for awhile, and only some models of it remove fluoride.

Some reverse osmosis systems get it out, but the fluoride filtering capability is one of the first they lose and there's no built-in test to show you when they've stopped filtering the fluoride out.

Activated Alumina filters get most fluoride out, and for the longest period of time - about 20,000 gallons or so, depending on the filter.

I got a combination of .5 micron filter and activated alumina for my kitchen. We've been happy with it, even tho the company tried to talk us out of it. They wanted us to get the zinc/copper filter but I don't want either added to my water.

The aluminum that may leach out from the activated alumina filter is aluminum oxide, which is pretty inert and also a common element of most soils, so I don't think it would affect fish health as they've probably adapted to live with it.

I got an estimate once for a housing and activated alumina filter for fish water - with a hose attachment on both ends it was around $59.00 in the US.

RE: collecting rainwater, if you can't get it from your roof, even a fairly small shed could quickly collect a surprising amount of water in a good rain.

Aluminum in your water is really bad also. Ever heard of Dementia or Alzheimers. Both are from aluminum in cookware products and deodorants and such.

Two ideas for you.
Make friends with and out of town person and haul water from his well or
Drill your own well.

For filters the 5 micron string filters and the charcoal set is about $50 in the US at Hardware and discount places like walmart.

I have my own well and I use the double filter set, string first to get the dirt out and the charcoal to get the smells and other stuff out. The water here where I live is called by the locals Irony water and has a sulfur smell so we use a sand filter to remove the sulfur smell. The sand filter has to set with out any pressure so the sulfur will escape. A pump in the clear water side pressure the water into the house where I have the filters and a surge tank.

I am not sure if you thought of it but it is a recircluating system so if you keep adding the water then all the bad stuff keeps accumilating....so the only way is to get water is to tanker in from a good water supply to start and then have your tanks(from a colourbond not zinc roof) to top up.... even if you had a tank there that they could put extra water in from the tanker..

Rain water collection for anyone even if you don't have an appropriate roof. This might not collect enough water Quickly to start up a brand new system but it should help with top ups anywhere that rain is regular.

Or, they just look kinda cool.
