steve: actually, although it takes 2.2MJ/kg to vapourise water, you don't generally boil your kettle dry when making the tea :)

I did some consulting work on some related issues recently, here is our report:

(The target audience was shire councillors)

I have checked some of njh's other posts - it is Nathan isn't it?

njh - there is a section called Member's Systems. It would be interesting to see a post on all the stuff you are doing....

Alternately, can you link to sections of your Blog? I can't seem to get past the first page.

Yes, it is I. What gave me away? My tiresome pedaticisticism? The fact that I disagree with everyone? My overly broad claims? Or the fact that my name is on my website?

My blogging program doesn't seem to link to older posts. At some point I'm going to switch to a slightly more advanced blog system (i.e. more than a script and bunch of files). I did put some links in the victoria thread.

I'll post to members systems at some point. Maybe tonight (just watching carols on TV and catching up on net stuff :)

(Is this on topic?)

Nathan, your picture on your website also gives away that you are significantly younger than 83.

Age has treated me kindly :) As I said, it's all the omega 13s from eating the fish.

Speaking of excessive pedantary - the oils in question are usually called omega-3 not omega 13.

Physiologists count from the "other end" of the carbon chain (the "omega" end) which causes great angst to people (like me) who study both chemistry and physiology.

There are a number of omega-3 oils but the bottom line is that they range from short ones (a chain 18 long with 3 double bonds) to long ones (22 long and 6 double bonds).... and here is where it gets interesting. People need the longer ones. It used to be thought that we could synthesize the long ones from short ones (which can be sourced from some nuts, seeds or other sources). However it turns out that this is not entirely true. Some people can synthesize some long ones..... enough to survive on, but not enough for optimal health.

Virtually the only source of long chain omega-3 is seafood. The fact that humans cannot synthesize optimal amounts, and must source it from seafood, has been used as evidence that humans had a semi-aquatic phase somewhere in their evolution.

the omega 13 was the time machine in galaxy quest.

Seafood or waterfood - do they have to live in the sea? If so, then aquaponics is a dead end.

I feel better now that it wasn't just me ;)

Considering australian jade perch has THE HIGEST omega-3 oil content i'd say fresh water will do nicely ;)

Quote:
In 1998 the CSIRO conducted a study on the beneficial oils that are found in Australian fish.

When compared with around 200 other seafoods, (A term which includes farmed fish.) Queensland Silver Perch come in a very good third. Later, Queensland Jade Perch were tested and found to contain extraordinary high levels of omega-3, making Queensland Jade Perch clearly number one of all the seafoods tested.

Number one, Queensland Jade Perch contained an incredible 2483 mg/100gm of omega-3 oils in the flesh.

Number two was the Sawfish, 1,667 milligrams of the good oil to every 100 grams.

Number three is the Atlantic Salmon. This fish has 842 milligrams per 100 grams.

Number four, Silver Perch has 792 milligrams per 100 grams of the "good oil. Yes that is very high indeed

Dead end? No. Even if there were no omega-3 in the fish you choose to raise, it still provides an uncontaminated source of protein with no food-miles, only food-feet. To say nothing of fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Cold water fatty fish (including freshwater trout) are the best source of omega-3. Less fatty fish such as catfish or tilapia also have omega-3, but in lesser amounts. Of course, folks consuming fatty fishes must also be aware of heavy metal build-up depending on the source of the fish.

Good, was just rechecking initial assumptions. aeldric tells me that the Ω 3s come from the algae. So I guess I should now find a thread on algae to hijack on growing Ω 3 rich algae.

gnash, I dunno, you look pretty health for a 34 year old dog! (On the internet nobody knows you're a dog) Speaking of knowses, I'd get my nose checked if I were you, pale dog's noses can get skin cancer pretty easily (our dog died from nose cancer).

Anyway, that photo of me is from years ago.
