It's a decent sized project. You better love projects or love cooking/baking.

Me & my family to a "T."

The origin of pizza is that they cooked it while waiting for the temperature of the wood fired oven to come down to temps appropriate to making bread.

I highly recommend Kiko Denzer's book, a great read, I'm on my second or third copy because I keep lending it out to people...

My problem (besides the goats dismantling it, me living in snowy Vermont with no roof over the oven) was that a few specks of cob would fall off the oven & into the food every time. Not a big deal with bread but kind of a drag with pizza.

So the next version will be brick.

I liked my mud oven (based on Kiko's book):

I hope to rebuild with brick and maybe some sort of roof. I bake most of our bread so it's great to not heat up the house in the summer & not have to pay for the propane.

OK, wait...
Here's what it looks like now:

Not sure how long the cob would have withstood all that snow.

Was your oven an adobe oven? You have inspired me to build my own... Seeing as how I have a big pile of mud in my backyard from the ponds I dug out. I tested my soil, which I found is about 50% clay, so I will need to add approx. 1 part sand and 1 part soil to get 75% sand 25% clay to make the adobe.

Seems like it should be easy to build. Make a frame, cover with adobe mud, burn out the frame. How did you make yours?

Buy Kiko's book or get it from your library.

The dome of the oven wasn't burned out. It was sand with a layer of paper over it, then the adobe on top. After everything was done, I dug out the sand little by little. I didn't think I'd ever finish but one day I came home & it had sort of unstuck itself (like a cake coming out of a pan).

It worked but like I said, when I rebuild it will be with bricks.

I brought a brilliant book with full instruction on building a brick oven, It even has recipies and advice on how to use it properly. I lent it to a handy friend who is going to help me build one in my yard. I just can't remember the title, but I got it from Angus and Robertson, in the DIY/ building section. Apparently you only need 150 bricks for the dome. If anyone is interested I will take a picture diary and post here as I build. Hope to do it May/ June. Weekend project :laughing3:

I've just lashed out and got myself a new bbq/oven. It's actually a #5 Imperial Kamado, about 40 years old from Japan. It has the diameter of a large Weber, but more room inside and much better to cook with. They're made from earthernware and can be used as a mini "wood" oven for pizza and bread as well as grill, roast, smoke, slow cook etc with charcol or brickettes.
