My tank is half buried and insulated with marine carpet which keeps the sun from warming the tank directly (its also a painted IBC). It seems to warm up pretty quickly from running through the GBs. Pretty much can tell what the tank temp will be by looking at the temp of the day and averaging the max and min etc....

I am wondering if anyone knows how much water is lost from a tank covered vs uncovered through evaporation... :wave1:

I insulated my system so I could keep trout all year round, otherwise I would not bother. Shade cover is the most essential aspect of keeping the temperature stable. In one of my systems direct sun can raise 1000L of water about 6-7c in one day, shade it and it shifts about 2-3c.

Micro climate of system location does play a huge part in the temperature of a system. Shade, access to prevailing cool breezes, distance from hot summer thermal masses like north facing brick walls. Location of the system is probably more important than insulation of the tank.

That is based on last 3 years including Black Saturday. This year the insulated system has not passed 24c but as you say its been much cooler this summer only 2 days at 40c
