Post subject: big worms first build
PostPosted: Jan 18th, '11, 07:52
well i have built my first system, having plenty of fish juice on hand i only need a bed system.
my buddy had five 5'x 4" sewer drain pvc pipes they were free and pre drilled for net baskets :headbang:
so i bought 10 push in end caps the cheap nock out ones. i also bought 20 tee"s and 90"s to have on hand.
keeping with the el'cheapo got it free... i had this in mind for the build. it must not use any electricity other that what is already in the FT system, and it has to work with simple minded owner. but not use any more energy than being expended. plus added on to existing fish system with minimal use of purchace funds....built from whats strewen about the place....
i have it! a simple gravity feed off the biofilter constant feed DWS. that discharges into the FT.
photos coming  a trip to the store for baskets and a bag of clay and im gone....tomorrow i will start some spinach seed to use for trials.

File comment: this is how the header fits inside, sort of like reverse stand pipes so they all fill and move water due to equal pressure and water seeking its own level...i think?

Impressive work big worm. I like your biofilter design as well. How long have you been able to run a biofilter continuously? Month's, years?

Also, I would be curious to know what brand pumps do you run?
Thanks

the one in the picture has been running for two years maybe three. as far as pumps i just buy pond pumps from lowes they seem to run ok as long as they don't ever run dry.
on tues. i am supposed to visit a hydro shop in the big city of greenville, i was told that they have very inexpencive pumps. i do know that 3" net baskets are .40 each

well i took my first trip to the hydro store today i bought a 50l bag of clay grow pellets for $41.95usa and 100 - 3" net pots for .40 each....good or bad pricing? i will say this, i think most folks visiting the store are NOT! growing lettuce or tomatoes.....they seemed very nervous while in there....lmao :D one car circled 3 times waiting for the store to be empty...gee i hope they were not robbers casing the joint

Ha, that's funny. What? People don't want to be associated with a store that helps people with growing their own, uh, food? Sheesh. But then again, I felt kinda funny going inside the hydro store when I visited one a month ago.
But yes, those prices are about right for around here.

Big Worm your lucky, we don't have a hydro store within 100 miles. Don't think it stops the homegrowers though. :?

Bought a growlight from a hydro store on EBay and it came with a free lighter, don't know why.

sounds about right on prices.. i lucked out and found a place selling 50l hydroton for $20 a bag.. they kill you on shipping, but the place was only a few minutes from the office so i picked up 4 bags last year.. the bottom half of each of my gb's are filled with regulard river gravel, w/ 1 bag of hydroton topping them off
net pots i've see from .30 to .50 for 3" so that sounds about right too
looking good so far, and i'm looking forward to seeing what you do

oh, and i might be getting some worms from you soon... got a couple things goin on, maybe more fish for my system, but got plans for an indoor worm bin, the outside bin is a bit frozen
