Could we breed these for fish/yabbies to eat?

Yes, many people who grow fish in dams add a couple of hundred glass shrimp and let them breed up to provide food for the fish, the size of the dams, the muddy water and plenty of places to hide mean the fish don't wipe them out and they are constantly breeding. For aquaponics just have a sepaerate tank, like a duck weed tank, and let them feed of the algae and add them to the Ft every few months.

Yes thats what im planning to do. Can i ask how do people grow algae? Just leave the tank in the sun?

I would keep it simple and just get a handful of duck weed or maybe azolea (not sure of the spelling). They spread real quick and wont cause you the problems you might get with the algae.

This idea is interesting so I ordered 20 shrimp from livefish, and will put half in an aquarium and the other half in the duckweed tank and see how fast the multiply.

Where do i get duck weed from? Can i order it online?

Ask a duck, if you have none of your own I believe Axl is giving some (ducks) away

I got my duckweed from a mate in Melbourne that has aquarium fish, who sent me some other plants. He apologised for the duckweed but I have been thanking him ever since

I know every waterway on the eastern seaboard is in flood at the moment,. but you shoudlbe able to catch shrimp in most streams \

Never caught any in my bait traps in the wimmera river. But I know they are in the murray.
Still would be nice to have a home breeding system

Years ago I caught some with a cast net and bred them in a small aquarium tank. I say go for it!

The breeding tank needs a lot of cover.... gravel, plants, driftwood, etc would be great for the little ones to hide. They also need small organisms to feed on so a planted tank is optimal. All this cover makes it hard to harvest so what you can do is put food in a net (such as an algae wafer) and set the net in the water for say 30 minutes and then just scoop them out when they are feeding in the net. Kinda mean, I know, but your other fishies will appreciate the effort!

Got some duckweed from a lady near me for $6 nice Time to get the shrimp

Anyone want to split some glass shrimp?

I think its $69 for 100. I live in riverwood, anyone want some?

I tried putting some wild-caught glass shrimp in one of my tanks (separate from the trout).

(a) I think they overflowed into the fish tank (it's a cascading system) before they had a chance to breed

(b) Fish like slightly lower pH and I'm not sure if this is bad for shelled critters?
