I know I have not been on for a long time, but, my thoughts and prayers brought me here as I think of my many friends here. As you well know, there are many praying for the flood victims and I join them in prayers.

Good work VB!!!

Was great to see those that helped out in any way they could. people donating there time, labour and plant/equipment is great!! the sooner its cleaned up the less contamination will affect the area.

Were having floods here in Vic atm, many rural towns are cut off, and evacuated to Safe areas, and they are asking for Donations of items so the wife setup a few Box fulls of toys, nappies, formula and baby food, along with some spare linen and blankets we no longer needed and lots of kids clothing and kids Board games etc.

its hard to imagine as a large family man myself how people cope with not having a home, i now my kids wouldn't handle it too well, they have never had to imagine what it would be like to lose everything. Great too see everyone band together and lend a hand too fellow aussies.

my heart go's out too those affected and i hope that we can have a while between the next batch of natural disasters that affect this country! Fires, Floods, Storms we'v all had the lot!!!!

our emergency services are being pushed to the limits every day!

Well do I have a funny story to tell all you guys.....It goes like this.... During this flood affected time just over 500 of my Jade perch decided that their air/water Ratio was not very good and died.....They ran out of water...How did that happen??? i here you say with the amount of water bucketing down around us.... well it seems that the amount of water made algae grow and block up an inlet to the sump tank...this is not the only contributing factor ...The fact that I had at some stage turned the Timer to ON instead of keeping it on AUTO as it would have overflowed (lmoa thinking about that now)...so the water overflowed above the sump and my other backup float valve wasnt plugged in ....SO tomorrow-tuesday we are of to Ausyfish in Childers to pick up another 700 fingerlings to restock.....On a lighter Note around 130 eating sized jades were fine in the other tank in about 1 foot of water(5000ltr tank) and we still have close to 4000 feeder fish and a HEAP of yabbies... TIME TO REBUILD AND LEARN FROM MISTAKES

Jeez Jaymie - that is not good. The old Gyproc does not cope well under water hey. My boss' house is similar situation in that all the gyproc has had to be removed as place was totaly immersed. In that situation you'd be wondering whether replacing with the same material is wise.

EB - even those not affected by the floods who were thinking about doing renovations will definitely be doing them (doing themselves that is - because there will be no tradies available for years).

Well I think the other question is whether it would be wise to rebuild in the same location knowing that if the government does nothing to improve flood containment, in about 30 years time, redecoration may be necessary again...

I assume you know all about Brisbane, and how flood water flow then, Ivan. perhaps you should offer your time to tell us how best to stop ever getting flooded. I'm sure theres a simple fix that none of the hydrologists have thought about yet. else, if you have nothing useful to say, perhaps you could shut your *frack* mouth....

Well orcy2010, contrary to your belief, I am pointing out something useful. I suppose I should add to my comments before someone else take offense to it.

I was actually pointing out that there have been indications after the 1974 floods that such a flood would re-occur. I believe I also read/heard somewhere that it is a 1 in 30 years event. However either to the lack of investigation or cover-up or whatever, or even possibly acceptance by the authority then that such a risk is low enough to be considered "ALARP" - As low as reasonably possible.

However with the increase in population over the years and new housing being approved, the risk profile changes. And maybe the appropriate experts have conducted studies but the people in authority may have decided that it was still ALARP despite population growth and maybe doubted the 1 in 30 years warning...

In my day job, I often participate in risk assessment, if it is based on 1 in 100 years, a major event would occur with multiple fatalities, and depending on the risk matrix, it might be considered acceptable with minor containment strategies. However, based on current data, 1 in 30 years, major event with multiple fatalies, I think it is no longer acceptable for minor containment strategies.

And I think the government realises...

Extract:
This is not a new dilemma for the Queensland capital. On February 6, 1974, just 10 days after the floods, The Australian warned that there were areas of the city that should never have been built on. We said that it was now "quite vital that local and state governments seize this opportunity to replan the city sensibly and safely. The 1974 floods are virtually certain to recur."
