Well I think I lost yabbies as well... my BYAP underbed yabbie tank seems to have some red looking yabbies floating around... water stinks... but I am not interested in cleaning up today...

The longer you leave it the more it will stink....it's just to hot for them after a couple of days of heat...the thermal mass doesn't give the tanks enough time to cool down of an evening :support:

Here is a thought  , ever wonder why (when you get yabbies from a dam  ) there are lots of them.
Apart from the water mass I believe its the water colour, they just can't see each other hence less fighting.
Another tip may just be sexing the yabbies and placing the males in your system only as they shouldn't get as territorial with no girls about.

The only way to fully stop the destruction of each other would be to remove the main pincer claws from the animal (they will actually grow back over time), this is a bit cruel but nothing close to the crap they do to themselves.

Just a thought

I have 3 males in my sump and they havent killed each other yet. I have also thought of the removing pincers approach. By the time they grow back the yabbies might be big enough for the pot

Aquafarm has a lot of them in the same tank. Lots of air going in so they may not see each other. I think its when they moult that a lot of them get killed off.

Yabbies will fight over food and also if they have plenty of food they will grow and therefore mault their shells and then get attacked while there shells are soft.
Try to put in yabbies all the same size, or all the same gender, have heaps and heaps of PVC tube hiding spots and move these regulary so if any do get territorial the constant changeing landscape will keep their egos in check.
Dont put in more than 4-5 per squre metre because A/P water is quite clear and if they can see each other they argue.

Spot on Duff - it's because every time before they moult they suddenly have a high nutrient demand.

They eat their own old shells for calcium but will eat their mates when they are soft
