With a little help from google and if my math is correct you could get a little over one ounce of rice per square foot. That is not a lot of nutrition for the space required. And depending on climate you could only get one or two crops a year (3 if conditions are ideal). I'm sure it could be done though as rice like it wet. Perhaps a little wild rice in a floating raft just for kicks would be fun - but I do not see it as a practicle crop for AP. It just takes to much space.

I tried it before.
It grew very quickly, but as Deja pointed out, it's not really an economic use of space.

I did it just to see how it grew compared with the rice in the paddies.

There is a research facility somewhere in Japan growing it indoors with Hydro and they just manage to squeeze 4 crops a year.

Hi all,

By chance I happened to come across some rice being grown on an apartment roof in India. Have a look at: using washing machine grey water- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrVt741F ... re=related , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WydSS3x ... re=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88gb3QWA7i0
I guess this could have been put in the ‘green roof’ thread as well.

Cheers.
