It seems most people who are raising trout chose rainbow trout (of those who mention the type). Is there any reason why Brook, Brown, and Cutthroat are less common? Are there some benefits I'm not seeing? Flavor? Availability? Has anyone run any of hybrids / crosses? Maybe I just haven't read the right posts yet?

Well, out here they are the most available/cheapest trout. I believe they also match or exceed others in any other aspects you care to measure.

But they can't handle warm water, so they (and tilapia for the mirror reason) are out for me. If I could buy them cheaper, though, I'd be happy to raise them as they are fast growing and wonderfully entertaining. And the visiting nieces and nephews love catching them from the swimming pool..

I think I read somewhere that rainbows grow faster than brown trout anyway.

We have Browns here to EB, I have a tank full of them at the moment. Those on the East Coast and Tassie should also be able to source Brook Trout if they wanted them.

Hi Troutman,
Do the browns and rainbows have different temp tolerences or growth rates that you are aware of ?

Rainbows can generally handle warmer water temps and they also have faster growth rates which makes them the best Trout for Aquaculture and Aquaponics.

Good info, Thanks! Know of any good books of online resources for learning more about trout? Have you noticed any flavor difference between the Rainbow and Brownies?
