Today I did my first harvest of 6 very nice sized rainbow trout. Still have about 20 left in the tank. There was a monster but he was very good at avoiding the net. Didn't weigh them as didn't have scales ready. Better prepared next time 8)

Nice work Silvertrees. They look like a good size. My humane method is to pierce their brain with a cake skewer, ike jime. There are you tube videos I'm pretty sure. (Ice slurry won't work on trout cause they love the cold.)

Hey mate :wave1: - the quicker the better and try to catch them all at once so they dont peak out. I felt sorry for the last few I chased around the tank...I favour the foot long piece of bamboo for head smacking.
Good work on the system looking great... :thumbright:

Hi
Nice fish
What did you have to do to get them through the 40 degree day, was it much of a hassle.

Very nice trout!!!! There will be some nice eating going on at your house!!!

I used the same sort of method as you, swift crack on the head with the back of a knife, then pierce the brain with the knife. Then gutted and off with the head, scale and de-fin

I wouldnt bother with scaling - a real pain and we dont eat the skin - it comes off iff smoked or bbq'd and saves a lot of hassle...

The new arivals have settled in well and I now have a few more mouths to feed. The weather is really helping ith the wter temp hovering between 14 and 19 degrees. The hot days are complimented by cool nights so if this continues may get to keep trout going for a couple more weeks.

Latest water test was Ammonia - 0 and PH 7.5 (tested in both FT and Fingerling Tank) :thumbright:

Ohh we ate the skin, was Nice after being fried up in a little Olive oil :)

trout were very easy to scale as they are fine small scales, i just used my normal Butchers filleting knife (Wiltshire) bout 10-15 seconds a side

Silvertree's: what temp range do cats like to live in?

Hi Jamey

My research states that the cats like water between 15 - 26 degrees but will survive 5 - 30. They are nocturnal so you won't see them much and I think I have some from an earlier purchase hiding in the main FT.

I like the fingerling tank :headbang: looks very neat.

Might borrow that for a trout tank for next winter?
