Yep sure can, but then you get all the waste, blood, offal, fur, and so forth dripping into your tank as well. :naughty:

Also, there are arguments that if any waste from the roadkill gets into the water, that the potential spread of disease could be much higher.

I personally wouldn't do it even with a tray underneath the carcass. Much better to have the maggots clean themselves out and be washed before putting into the tank. Well that's my opinion anyway. :thumbleft:

definitely a good point about the fur and crud getting into the tank.

And probably right about cleaning the HFLM out first. BSFL empty their gut as they climb the ramp so that is on a par. People (some) say you should also do the same to earthworms, but I've never bothered and they don't seem to cause any probs.

That's going to depend on your design Deegsta - there's no one solution fits all - so how about a pic or a diagram ?

No, put 'em in bran or flour and let 'em clean themselves out.

the smaller pipe goes inside the 90 mil drain pipe so hopefully the maggots can not get out the top there is a 5-10mil gap between both pipes so they can clinb up but hopfully they will fall back down and go out the other way

Clever, Dave !

Have you solved the problem of harvesting them ? 90mm hole in a ice-cream container (with lid) or something similar should do it.

yeh nice one..! :thumbright:

But if you keep the internal of the collection system relatively dry i.e. not too much moisture is allowed to accumulate from food stuffs or rain, the maggots shouldn't be able to climb up anyway..

And it looks like in your wood shed it is fairly dry.! :D

Wow, brilliant work Tony.. So any idea roughly what sort of conversion your getting? For a 4kg possum what weight of fish feed did you end up with?

Ok, let the research continue...! :thumbright:

Day 1 (four days ago), 1 x 3.6kg possum into the Biopod.

Day 5 (today) there were an absolute stack of maggots doing there thing.. And the blowies are back. With some MASSIVE maggots in amongst the HFLM too.. Cannot wait..!

So the conversion rate measurements will start any day soon.. :toothy5:

File comment: The Biopod has been cleaned out and fresh with another carcass. At Day 5 it's on it way to producing more juicy maggots

In addition to the 5 day old possum carcass already in the Biopod, it was unfortunately for wildlife, a good collection day yesterday during a kayaking trip toward the South of the state..

I stopped 3 times to pick these things up with my wife just laughing at some of the really strange stares I got from passing motorists as I popped the carcasses into the back of my ute.. :funny1:

I wasn't allowed to collect anymore though as she was actually correct when exclaiming "you won't fit anymore in the bucket..!" :notworthy:

So, a total of 2 possums and 2 Pademelon's (wallaby) weighing exactly 12kg (1kg container weight) went into the Biopod which is now stocked to the brim. That makes a total of 15.6kg of carcasses.

The Biopod will now be left for approximately 6 - 8 weeks until all carcasses have been completely consumed. :-P

Everything crawling out and into the collection container will be weighed before being frozen or going into the tank to feed the fish (which the salmon are now 250-350 gms I might add :D ).

Once weighed, a conversion rate can then be calculated which will allow for comparison to fish meal, HFLM dried meal, and BSF.

wow that is some dedication to research. I gotta be honest; it's a bit stomach turning. That said, can't beat a free source of food for the fish.
