What no reply from OBO

Without reading the 2 ages that have popped up since, I ran out of time to reply to a low priority thread :D

The thing that is wrong with mining towns - High Income + very little time off = massive blowouts when they happen.

I'll go out on the town maybe twice a year, and make a real mess of myself. Mainly because I can afford to drink as much as I like, so I do :D

How about the kids in fifo families who are left at home with mum who can not control them by herself so they run a muck. These families usually have large disposable incomes so throw money at the kids to try and fix the problem which generally makes them worse.

I always remember when I was working fifo that the married guys were clearly defined into two groups, those who hated going home as they got in the way of the routine at home when they were there and those who hated going to work as they just wanted to be at home with their families. I managed it as a single guy but only lasted about three months once I entered a relationship I cared about.

I do think there is a happy middle ground here. There is also a difference between 'operations' v's 'construction'.

My previous role was with an 'operations' company, the guys worked an 8/6 7/7 (days) roster. When you take into account they flew on company time, in terms of meals at home, it's pretty good. I am based in Perth, always have been, but do have to take regular trips to site (try to make it day trips). The point is, there are a bunch of guys my age with young families, and the guys on these rosters get to spend often more time with their kids than I do. before the kids even get up, I am last seen heading for the train station heading for the CBD, often not seen again till 6pm, time for dinner, bath then off to bed.

Now be honest guys, how many are in the same situation? These FIFO guys get to spend every 2nd week (if they want to of course, but that's a whole other conversation), dropping the kids off at school, picking them up, shcool assemblies, cricket training, swimming lessons etc etc etc, I don't get to do that very often.

Now: I'm still working in the CBD, but for mining construction, these guys work what I can describe as not nice rosters, these are generally 11/3, 21/7, 23/5, 22/6 etc. Why, they get the $$$, but they work for it. You just talk to these guys, and yes there are family pressures, but they can do this for several years, and set up the family, then try to move to a lower paying role in Perth. Can this take it's toll on families, possibly, but it's not like the 'traditional' family unit is free from family problems either, the divorse rate for those is still higher than it has ever been. I have possibly painted construction in a poorer light here, but there are a heap of guys who are dedicated family men, THEY MAKE IT WORK.

When we hear of a family breaking up where a partner does FIFO, we naturally blame the FIFO, but I ask you, how many of these may have broken up anyway, that we will never know.

Just food for thought.

Cheers

Wazza

Well that's the theory of course, but some recent reports I've heard haven't been painting such a rosy picture. Especially for those living in the mining towns... I hear it constantly when my mate comes down from Karratha where he's a teacher... But then I'd complain too if I was living in Karratha... :)

Ha, I'd complain too if I were a teacher!

Are you human?: occasionally
Location: Qld.
I lived in a mining town Qld the pub was called festival hall ,there was a fight every Saturday night.
2 different mining companies and the private contractors gave you 3 different groups that didn't like each other when drunk
The private contractors where out of towners.
I didn't last long great money crap life.
too many bogans with the lastest toys, plenty of guys who just had all the bogan bling and would eventually leave with not much other than second hand toys.
As for plenty of work its a funny thing the town virtually had full employment but it was very difficult to get a job for say BHP who where constantly complaining of having an ageing workforce yet there where locals working for me as labourers ,who where earning half of what they would get with the big places and just couldn't get in the door.
