As per the 'Barra for sale Perth' thread, I went to Challenger Tafe this AM and got some more barra - 40 odd in total - some of which will be farmed off to a mates system once it's up n running in the next month or so.

Met TonyAbalone - a great guy, very helpful and most accomodating. Gave me a cooks tour of the Aquaculture Section of Tafe. Very cool! The kingfish broodstock they have are incredible!! The barra broodstock are most impressive too!

Had to quickly acclimate the barra to my FT as I had to dash out. Poors guys got tipped into water that was a couple (??) of degrees cooler than what they came from. Chucked in a 300W heater as a consolation for their discomfort.

Spoke to Tony about his BB too. They are currently in salt water, but he is going to slowly acclimate the fish to freshwater over the next week or 2, after which they will be available for AP'ists @ $1 a head. They are about 60-100mm and about 10-11 months old. Cute lil buggers. May even get some for my aquarium. Low maintenance and a 'pretty' aquarium fish too.

I'll be interested to see how you go with the Barra Bluethumb, I reckon there will be a few people eating large sardines just before winter.....

Converted mine over the course of a weekend - 100% survival.

I hear ya mate. It'll be a shame because the barra I got from Tony arent that much smaller than the ones I have already in my FT - the ones I overwintered. Disappointing growth n prolly wont bother with barra over winter again. Will just buy some advanced stage ones from Tafe next year.

Fortunately they are gearing up for the AP boom and demand. I spied a hatchling tank with @ 25000 SP guys who are only 2 or 3 days old.

I converted my last BB from salt to fresh in about 15 minutes or less....
