 perhaps you should take your own advice?
but seriously, from my limited knowledge of siphons i'd say you problem is a reduced head / increased flow phenomenon . . .
how much does it have to drop before the siphon functions again??

¡Fingers crossed!

I have been left no alternative but to leave my own lil' AP ecocosm to fend for itself over the next week or 2.

I harvested and dined on the trout on the weekend, then tipped the barra that I have nursed all summer into the main FT, leaving a current fishstock of 6 barra and 10 SP. At this point, the SP are double the size of the barra, so I'm ambitiously hoping the two species will cohabitate jus fine for a week, after which they will be separated.

My scheduled AP minder let me down at the last minute, so I have enacted an emergency plan for the system, as follows:

• liberal serves of duckweed for the SP

• a dozen iddy biddy comets for the barra. I know, I know - not an ideal situation for the barra, because if they opt to dine on a comet or 6, I'll be left to wean them to pellets on my return.

So - SP + comets on duckweed. Barra on comets!

Also, I fiddled with my siphon situation by topping my tank higher/fuller than normal, throwing my siphons outta whack. Bugger. So the bells were removed and the system has been left on constant flow - constant flood for the next little while! C'est la vie! On all accounts (TCLynx and C1), they have done the same (??) on absence from the system or through harsh weather spells. I'm hoping my baby pulls through! I'm optimistic!

If anyone is in the North Perth area n happy to do a drop in, I'd be most obliged!

Was down at BYAP Tuesday arvo n ha the pleasure of speaking with Raelene (sp?) and Carl - most helpful indeed. I spied their healthy black bream stock, tempting me to continue forth on maybe a SP + BB mixed tank. Thoughts, CD? EB?

Wish me luck!

Ah Ha so you have that problem too with the siphons, make sense, all goes well till we top up. Will have to come up with a system to level out the sump or pump location tank (for lack of better words) to keep constant head height, may be the million dollar question or have a whole heap of ders! or just critics from the siphon haters. one way or another it will be a good new mission to play with.........GO THE SIPHON.....yeeehhaar!..lol

Back from abroad and the system is still alive - and definitely kicking!

It seems as if the barra dined contentedly on the comets, as they had grown despite being hand-feed.

Current stock after 2 week absence:

Barra - 6 - all accounted for
SP - 12 - all acounted for
Comets - 0 - :support:

Plants went AWOL - came home to find fully grown cuces, eggplants, ears of corn, 100's upon 100's of cherry, roma and grosse lisse toms, new brocollini shoots, capsicum - everything! Was amazed to see the growth, but I guess I wouldn't notice it when here every day, as it is akin to watching the kettle boil!

Had some major evaporation issues - would have lost @ 400ish litres of water, I'd say? Left the tank with @ 800mm of water, came home to find the FT with about 350mm left! Madness! The water level was only inches above the FT pump!

So all is well. Duckpond fed the SP, comets the barra, and water the vegie gods!

It seems as if the barra are happy to take pellets again after having live feed. I haven't seen them take the feed, but can hear the pronounced 'popping' of their jaws when standing away from the tank, just as they did as fingerlings all through winter the the aquarium!

Maybe some BB for my old IBC system next?!

Good luck?! Pfft!

I put it down to knowledge, skills and experience! :shifty:

I digress - I was very lucky, considering it was completely unmonitored - rogue, even!
